Because this grill relies on a gravity-fed hopper, the charcoal must descend into the firepot at a consistent rate. When you see a 100-degree drop, it usually means the combustion zone is starved of oxygen or the fuel is "bridging"—where large pieces of lump charcoal wedge against the walls of the hopper, creating an air pocket that prevents new fuel from dropping into the heat zone. Additionally, this specific model is highly sensitive to ash accumulation. If the ash buildup in the firepot reaches a height of more than one inch, it creates a physical barrier that restricts the airflow from the fan. This results in a "smothering" effect where the charcoal glows but cannot reach the high-intensity combustion temperatures required to hit your set point. You can confirm this by checking the exhaust vent; if you see thick, white smoke instead of clear heat haze, your fire is oxygen-starved.
How to Fix It
To restore full heating capacity and eliminate the temperature gap, follow these precise steps:
- Clear the Ash Reservoir: Open the ash cleanout door at the bottom of the firebox. Use a shop vac or a metal scoop to remove every bit of ash from the bottom tray. Ensure the ash doesn't block the intake area where the fan pushes air into the pot.
- Break the Bridge: With the grill off, take a heavy-duty grill brush or a metal rod and gently poke down through the top of the hopper. If you feel resistance, you have a "bridge." Break this up to ensure the charcoal is flowing freely toward the firepot.
- Optimize Fuel Grade: Avoid using oversized "jumbo" lump charcoal. If you are using 100% large lump, mix it with 30% high-quality briquettes. The smaller, uniform size of the briquettes acts as a lubricant for the larger pieces, preventing bridges and ensuring a steady gravity feed.
- Seal the Air Leaks: Check the ash door latch. If the door is slightly ajar or the gasket is worn, air will take the path of least resistance through the door rather than being pushed by the fan through the coals. Ensure the door is slammed shut and locked.
- Calibrate the Vent: Set your top exhaust vent to the fully open position. If the exhaust is restricted, the fan cannot push fresh oxygen through the fuel bed, regardless of the fan speed.

- Test the Fan Output: Power on the grill and place your hand directly against the fan intake. You should feel a strong, consistent vibration and a significant push of air. - Verify Power Supply: If you are using an extension cord, ensure it is a heavy-duty 12-gauge cord. Low voltage can cause the fan to spin slower than the controller intends, resulting in lower-than-expected temperatures.
