Diagnosis
The issue stems from a fundamental misunderstanding of the Tailwind iQ3 architecture. Unlike traditional garage door openers that pair via a physical remote or a Bluetooth handshake, the iQ3 is a cloud-managed system. The hardware is bound to a single primary administrator account. When a second user attempts to "set up" the device from scratch on their own phone, the iQ3 will reject the pairing request because it is already registered to a unique MAC address associated with the primary account. The "failure" your partner is experiencing is likely a result of them trying to go through the initial "Add Device" installation flow. Because the iQ3 is already active and connected to your home Wi-Fi, it will not enter pairing mode again unless a hard factory reset is performed, which would actually kick the primary user off the system. To confirm this is the issue, check if your partner is seeing a "Device already registered" error or if the app simply hangs on the "Searching for device" screen during setup.
How to Fix It
To grant your partner access, you must use the invitation system to create a secondary user profile. This links their unique device ID and email to your existing cloud bridge without requiring a new hardware pairing process.
- Open the Tailwind app on the primary administrator's smartphone.
- Tap the Settings gear icon located in the top right corner of the main dashboard.
- Select the Users & Sharing menu option from the list.
- Tap the Invite User button (usually indicated by a plus sign).
- Enter your partner's exact email address. Ensure there are no typos, as the invitation is tied strictly to the email used to create their Tailwind account.
- Assign the permission level. Select Full Access if you want them to be able to change settings and manage other users, or Limited Access if they should only be able to open and close the door.
- Tap Send Invite.
- On your partner's phone, have them open their email app and locate the invitation from Tailwind. They must click the Accept Invitation link within the email.
- If they haven't already, they will be prompted to create a Tailwind account. Once the account is created and the link is accepted, the garage door controller will automatically appear on their home screen.
If That Didn't Work
- Check Email Spam/Junk Folders: The invitation emails are frequently flagged as promotional content. If the email hasn't arrived within 5 minutes, check the "Promotions" tab in Gmail or the "Junk" folder in Outlook. If it's missing, delete the pending invite in your settings and resend it.
- Verify Account Email Match: The email address you invite must be the exact same email address your partner used to sign up for the Tailwind app. If you invited "[email protected]" but they signed up using "[email protected]," the invitation will never link to their active session.
- Force Close and Cache Clear: If the partner has accepted the invite but the door still isn't appearing, have them force-close the Tailwind app (swipe up and away) and restart their phone. This forces the app to refresh the cloud token and pull the shared device list from the server.
- Network Synchronization: Ensure the partner's phone is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the iQ3 during the initial acceptance of the invite. While not strictly required for cloud operation, it helps the app verify the local environment during the first handshake.
Heads Up
- Avoid Factory Resets: Do not press the reset button on the iQ3 hardware to "fix" a second-user issue. This will wipe your Wi-Fi credentials and the primary account link, forcing you to reinstall the entire system from scratch.
- Permission Tiers: Be mindful that "Full Access" users can accidentally delete other users or change the "Auto-Open" geofencing parameters, which may affect your own arrival experience.
- Geofencing Conflicts: If both you and your partner have "Auto-Open" enabled, the door may trigger based on whoever arrives first. If you have a multi-car garage, ensure you have assigned the correct door to the correct user in the sharing settings.
- Firmware Updates: Ensure your iQ3 is running the latest firmware. Outdated versions of the bridge can occasionally cause "Invite Pending" glitches where the invitation is sent but never activated.
