Diagnosis
The rapid, rhythmic clicking emanating from the Tailwind iQ3 unit is the sound of the internal dry-contact relay rapidly switching on and off. This "chattering" occurs when the iQ3's onboard logic detects a conflict between the command it is sending and the feedback it is receiving from the garage door opener's logic board. Essentially, the iQ3 is attempting to "close the circuit" to trigger the door, but it immediately senses that the circuit hasn't shifted state as expected, causing it to reset and retry the trigger in a millisecond loop. This is most commonly caused by a "floating" signal or a high-resistance connection in the two-wire trigger cable. If the wires are loose, oxidized, or crossing with other signal wires (like the safety beam wires), the iQ3 perceives a signal fluctuation that mimics a button press, triggering a safety loop. It can also happen if your garage door opener has an integrated "Smart" feature or a security+ 2.0 encrypted wall button that is fighting the iQ3's simple momentary switch, leading to an electronic tug-of-war that manifests as that rapid clicking sound.
How to Fix It
To resolve the relay chatter, you must ensure a clean, isolated electrical path between the iQ3 and the opener's terminal strip. Follow these exact steps:
- Disconnect the power to your garage door opener by unplugging it from the 120V outlet or flipping the dedicated breaker to ensure no voltage is present during the fix.
- Locate the two thin trigger wires running from the iQ3 to the back of your opener motor. Unplug them from the opener's terminal strip (usually labeled "Wall Button" or "Push Button").
- Inspect the ends of the wires. If the copper is frayed or oxidized (darkened), trim 1/4 inch off the end of each wire and strip back 1/8 inch of fresh insulation to expose bright, clean copper.
- If your opener uses screw terminals, ensure the wires are wrapped clockwise around the screw and tightened firmly. If it uses spring-loaded terminals, ensure the wire is inserted fully and the terminal is snapped shut.
- Check for "wire crowding." If the iQ3 wires are bundled tightly with the safety sensor wires, separate them by at least 2 inches to prevent electromagnetic interference (EMI) from triggering the relay.
- Reconnect power and attempt to operate the door via the Tailwind app. The clicking should be replaced by a single, crisp "click" followed by the door moving.
If That Didn't Work
- Install a Capacitor/Resistor Bypass: If you have a high-end Chamberlain or LiftMaster with a "Smart" wall console, the iQ3 may be unable to trigger the encrypted circuit. You will need to install a 470-ohm resistor in parallel with the iQ3 trigger wires to simulate the resistance of a factory wall button, which stabilizes the signal and stops the relay from chattering.
- Relocate the iQ3 Unit: If the iQ3 is mounted directly onto the metal chassis of the opener, the vibration or electrical noise from the motor can interfere with the relay. Move the unit 6-12 inches away from the motor housing using the provided mounting bracket and double-sided adhesive.
- Check for Short Circuits: Use a multimeter to test the continuity of the two trigger wires. If you see any continuity when the iQ3 is disconnected, the wires are pinched or shorted somewhere along the run. Replace the trigger cable with a new 22AWG shielded wire.
- Power Cycle the Logic Board: Completely discharge the opener's capacitors by leaving the power unplugged for at least 5 minutes. This clears any "ghost" errors in the opener's logic board that might be rejecting the iQ3's trigger signal.

- Avoid Over-tightening: When securing wires to the terminal strip, do not over-torque the screws; this can shear the thin 22AWG wire, creating an intermittent connection that causes the clicking to return.
- Voltage Warning: Never connect the iQ3 trigger wires to a power source (like a 12V battery or a 120V outlet). The iQ3 uses a "dry contact" relay; adding voltage to these wires will permanently fry the internal relay.
- Firmware Sync: If the clicking occurs only during app-controlled opens but not manual opens, check the Tailwind app for a firmware update. Outdated logic can occasionally cause timing mismatches with newer opener models.
