how do i clean the filters on my winix 5510 air purifier? do i wash them?

You'll clean the Pre-Filter regularly, but you never wash the main True HEPA and Carbon Filters. Here's how to do it safely.

  1. Unplug the unit from the wall outlet. Grasp the plug, not the cord.
  2. Open the front panel by grasping its upper edge and pulling it gently forward.
  3. Remove the Pre-Filter (the front mesh).
  4. Use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment or a handheld vacuum to clean the Pre-Filter. If it's really dirty, you can rinse it in room temperature water—no detergent or soap. Let it dry for at least 24 hours before putting it back.
  5. While you're in there, use a damp cloth with room temperature water to wipe down the interior of the unit. Wipe it dry with a clean cloth.
  6. Reinstall the dry Pre-Filter, close the front panel securely, and plug the unit back in.

If that didn't work: The Activated Carbon and True HEPA filters behind the Pre-Filter are not washable. You only vacuum or brush off loose dust from their exterior surfaces. They need replacement when the Check Filter Indicator LED turns on.

Heads up: For best performance, clean the Pre-Filter every 1 to 2 months. Always unplug before any cleaning.
