Diagnosis
The unusual hissing is almost always caused by a partial blockage in the pressure regulator (the weighted valve or "jiggler") or the air vent/pressure release valve it sits on. Food starch, grease, or tiny food particles can get trapped inside these components, preventing the regulator from sealing properly or from rocking smoothly. This forces steam to escape through a smaller, irregular gap, creating that erratic hissing sound instead of the steady, rhythmic rocking of normal operation.
How to Fix It
- Let the cooker cool completely and release all pressure.
- Carefully lift the pressure regulator straight off its vent stem.
- Wash the regulator in warm, soapy water, using a bottle brush or pipe cleaner to scrub the interior channel and the small hole in the bottom.
- Clean the air vent/pressure release valve stem it sits on. Use a cotton swab dipped in soapy water to wipe the stem and ensure its tiny side vent holes are clear.
- Rinse both parts thoroughly with clean water and dry them completely before reassembling.
If That Didn't Work
If the noise persists after cleaning, inspect the rubber gasket (sealing ring) around the lid. A worn or misaligned gasket can also cause steam leaks and noise. Remove it, wash it, and ensure it's seated correctly in its groove. If the gasket is cracked, stiff, or stretched, it needs to be replaced. Also, check that the regulator itself isn't damaged or warped.
Heads Up
Never attempt to clean or remove the pressure regulator while the cooker is pressurized or hot. Always perform maintenance when the cooker is cool and at zero pressure. Forcing a blocked regulator can be dangerous.
