These oils become rancid over time, which can contaminate the first few brews upon restart and potentially clog the needle assembly. Confirming the machine is fully drained is essential; if you hear a "gurgling" sound during the final brew cycle but water stops flowing, there is still trapped air and liquid in the lines that needs to be addressed.
How to Fix It
To ensure your K-Classic remains operational and hygienic after months of dormancy, follow this precise decommissioning sequence:
- Empty the Reservoir: Remove the water reservoir and pour out any remaining water. Use a clean, lint-free microfiber cloth to wipe the interior walls of the tank to remove any slippery slime or mineral residue.
- Purge the Internal Lines: Fill the reservoir with just enough water to trigger the sensor. Place a large mug on the drip tray. Press the "Large Cup" button. Wait for the 4-5 second pump delay, and allow the machine to dispense all water until the pump begins to sound "strained" (a higher pitched humming). This clears the heating element and the internal tubing.
- Sanitize the Needle: Use a paperclip or a thin needle to gently clear the exit needle (the one that punctures the bottom of the K-Cup) to ensure no coffee grounds are stuck, which could attract pests or mold during storage.
