Diagnosis
The Midea WHS-65LB1 is a single-zone compact refrigerator that utilizes a direct-cool system. Unlike full-sized fridges with forced-air fans, this model relies on natural convection. The evaporator coils are embedded directly behind the back interior wall. Because the cooling source is localized at the rear, a steep temperature gradient is created: the "dead zone" of extreme cold exists directly against the back wall, while the "warm zone" exists near the door seal where heat leakage is highest. This specific issue occurs when the thermostat dial is set too high (typically 5, 6, or 7) to compensate for warm items in the front. By cranking the dial up, you force the compressor to run longer, driving the back wall temperature well below freezing (often hitting 20°F to 28°F), which freezes your drinks. Meanwhile, the air doesn't circulate efficiently to the front, leaving your milk at 45°F or higher. You can confirm this by placing a digital probe thermometer in a glass of water at the front and another at the back; a difference of more than 10 degrees indicates a circulation and setting imbalance.
How to Fix It
To balance the internal climate and prevent "back-wall freeze," follow these precise calibration steps:
- Clear the back wall. Ensure no containers, bottles, or food items are touching the rear interior panel. Leave a gap of at least 2 inches (5cm) to allow cold air to "fall" toward the bottom and circulate forward.
- Reset the Thermostat Dial. Locate the dial inside the unit. If it is currently set to 6 or 7, rotate it counter-clockwise to position 3 or 4. This reduces the compressor's duty cycle, preventing the evaporator plate from reaching sub-zero temperatures.
- Implement Zonal Loading. Place high-mass items (like large soda bottles) on the middle shelf, halfway between the back and front. Place highly perishable dairy (milk, cream) in the center-front of the shelf, but never in the door bins, as the door is the warmest part of the unit.
- Level the Unit. Use a bubble level on top of the fridge. If the unit leans forward, cold air pools at the back. Adjust the leveling feet at the bottom front until the unit has a very slight backward tilt (about 1-2 degrees), which helps the door seal tighter and encourages air movement.
- Wait 24 Hours. Do not adjust the dial again for a full day. Compact fridges have high thermal mass and take significantly longer to stabilize after a setting change.
If That Didn't Work
- Check the Door Gasket Integrity. Take a piece of paper and close the door on it. If you can pull the paper out with no resistance, the seal is leaking. Warm air is entering the front, forcing the thermostat to keep the compressor running, which freezes the back. Clean the gasket with warm soapy water or replace the seal if it is warped.
- Inspect for Frost Build-up. Look at the back wall. If you see a thick layer of ice or "snow" (more than 1/8th inch), the fridge is struggling to exchange heat. Manually defrost the unit by unplugging it and leaving the door open for 12 hours. Do not use a knife to scrape the ice, as you will puncture the refrigerant lines.
- Verify External Clearance. Ensure there is at least 3 inches of open space between the back of the fridge and the wall. If the condenser coils on the back are suffocated, the compressor runs overtime to compensate, creating an uneven temperature spike inside.
- Test the Ambient Temperature. If the room is colder than 50°F (e.g., in a garage), the thermostat may not trigger correctly, leading to erratic cooling patterns. Move the unit to a climate-controlled environment.

- Avoid "Over-stuffing." Filling the shelves to capacity blocks the natural convection of air, which is the only way this model cools the front of the cabin.
- Never store liquids in glass bottles directly against the back wall; the localized freezing will cause the glass to crack or the liquid to expand and burst the cap.
- Clean the exterior condenser coils (the black grid on the back) every six months using a vacuum or soft brush to maintain cooling efficiency.
- Avoid opening the door frequently. Because this model lacks a recovery fan, every time you open the door, you lose the "cold blanket" of air at the bottom, requiring the compressor to work harder and freeze the back wall again.
