Diagnosis
The presence of horizontal streaks, missing color bands, or "white lines" in your documents is a definitive sign of partial or total nozzle occlusion in the Epson EcoTank ET-2850 printhead. This occurs when ink dries at the microscopic openings of the nozzles, creating a physical plug that prevents ink from flowing onto the paper. Because the ET-2850 uses a hybrid ink system—pigment-based black ink for text and dye-based colors for photos—the black nozzles are particularly prone to clogging if the printer sits idle for more than two weeks. The root cause is often "air intrusion" or ink sedimentation. In EcoTank models, air bubbles can migrate from the external tanks into the ink lines, breaking the vacuum seal and causing the printhead to "starve" for ink. When you run a nozzle check and see gaps in the grid pattern, you are seeing exactly which nozzles are blocked. If the gaps are consistent across all colors, you likely have an air lock; if they are only in one color (usually black), you have a localized clog or a depleted ink level in the internal damper.
How to Fix It
Do not repeatedly run standard cleaning cycles, as this can overflow the internal waste ink pads and trigger a "Service Required" error. Follow this precise sequence to clear the blockage:
- Perform a Nozzle Check: Navigate to Settings > Maintenance > Nozzle Check on the printer's LCD screen. Print the page. If more than 15% of the lines are missing, proceed.
- Run a Single Print Head Cleaning: Go to Settings > Maintenance > Print Head Cleaning. After the cycle finishes, print another nozzle check. If the pattern is still broken, do not run a second cleaning immediately.
- The 12-Hour Rest Period: This is the most critical step. Turn the printer off and leave it unplugged for 12 hours. This allows the dried ink to soften and the air bubbles to naturally rise back toward the tanks.
- Power Cleaning (The Heavy Duty Fix): If the 12-hour rest fails, navigate to Settings > Maintenance > Power Cleaning. Warning: This process consumes a significant amount of ink and requires the ink tanks to be at least one-third full. Ensure you have enough ink before starting, as running a Power Cleaning with low ink can introduce more air into the lines.
- Final Verification: Run a final Nozzle Check. If the grid is now solid, print 5-10 pages of full-color images to fully prime the printhead.
If That Didn't Work
- Manual Damper Priming: If the Power Cleaning fails, there is likely a large air bubble in the ink dampers (the small plastic reservoirs sitting directly atop the printhead). You will need to open the printer casing, remove the damper cartridges, and use a 10ml syringe to manually draw ink from the bottom of the damper until no air bubbles remain.
- Printhead Solvent Flush: For severe clogs, use a dedicated printhead cleaning solution (non-corrosive). Place a lint-free cloth or a specialized cleaning strip under the printhead carriage. Drip 2-3ml of solvent onto the strip and let the printhead sit submerged in the liquid for 24 hours to chemically dissolve the dried pigment.
- Check Ink Vent Tabs: Ensure the yellow transportation lock (if applicable to your regional model) is set to the "Printing" position. If the vents on the ink tanks are blocked or the lids aren't seated correctly, a vacuum forms, preventing ink from flowing to the nozzles regardless of how many cleaning cycles you run.
- Update Firmware: Occasionally, ink delivery timing is improved via firmware. Check the Epson Software Updater on your PC to ensure the ET-2850 is running the latest version to optimize the printhead firing sequence.

- Print Weekly: To prevent future clogs, print at least one full-color page every 7-10 days. This keeps the ink moving and prevents pigment sedimentation.
- Avoid Third-Party Ink: Using non-genuine inks in the ET-2850 can lead to "grainy" prints or faster nozzle clogging due to different viscosity levels and impurities.
- Ink Level Monitoring: Never let the ink levels drop below the lower line on the tanks. If the printhead sucks in air from an empty tank, a standard cleaning cycle will not fix it; you will need a Power Cleaning or manual priming.
- Avoid "Deep Cleaning" Loops: Running more than three consecutive cleaning cycles without a break can overheat the printhead and permanently damage the piezo crystals.
