Diagnosis
The "Paper Jam" error on a brand new Epson EcoTank ET-2850, when no physical paper is visible, is typically caused by a "false positive" triggered by the paper sensor flags. These are small, black plastic levers located along the paper path that move when paper passes over them. If a lever is stuck in the "down" or "active" position, the printer's logic board assumes there is a blockage and halts all operations to prevent mechanical damage. In new units, this is most frequently caused by residual shipping materials. Small strips of clear adhesive tape or orange protective plastic tabs may have been missed during the initial unboxing. Even a tiny fragment of cardboard from the packaging that fell into the rear feed slot can obstruct the sensor flag. Additionally, if the printer was tilted during transport, the carriage or the sensor flags can occasionally shift out of alignment, causing the sensor to fail to reset after the initial setup test page.
How to Fix It
Follow these precise steps to clear the ghost jam and reset the sensor flags:
- Power down the printer completely and unplug the power cable from the wall outlet. This is critical to discharge the capacitors and reset the internal logic.
- Open the scanner unit by lifting it upward. Check the carriage path; ensure the print head can move freely from left to right. If it is locked in a "home" position with a piece of blue or orange tape, remove it carefully.
- Inspect the rear paper feed slot using a high-lumen flashlight. Look specifically for the "pickup" sensor—a small plastic arm. Use a can of compressed air to blow out the rear feed area to dislodge any invisible dust or packaging fibers.
- Locate the output tray area. Gently reach inside and feel for any small scraps of paper or plastic. If you find a piece of tape, use a pair of tweezers to pull it straight out; do not push it further into the rollers.
- Check the rear access door (if applicable to your specific regional sub-model). Ensure the door is snapped shut completely; if the latch is slightly loose, the printer will trigger a jam error.
- Plug the power cable back in and turn the printer on. If the error persists, perform a "Hard Reset" by holding the power button for 10 seconds while the printer is booting.
If That Didn't Work
- Perform a "Roller Clean" via the maintenance menu. Navigate to Settings > Maintenance > Paper Guide Cleaning. Even though it's a new printer, the rollers may have factory lubricant that is causing the paper to slip, which the printer interprets as a jam because the paper didn't reach the sensor in the expected timeframe.
- Check the paper tray alignment. Ensure the edge guides are snug against the paper but not pinching it. If the paper is skewed by even 2 millimeters, it can trigger the sensor flag prematurely, causing a "False Jam" error.
- Inspect the "PF" (Paper Feed) roller. Use a lint-free cloth dampened with a tiny amount of distilled water to wipe the rubber rollers in the rear feed. If there is factory residue on the rubber, the grip will fail, and the printer will report a jam because the paper isn't moving.
- Update the firmware via the Epson Software Updater on your computer. There have been documented cases where the sensor sensitivity thresholds were adjusted in firmware updates to reduce false positives on the ET-2850 series.
Heads Up
- Never use a vacuum cleaner inside the printer; the static electricity generated by the nozzle can fry the print head electronics. Use compressed air instead.
- Avoid using "Heavy" or "Premium" paper settings for standard 20lb office paper, as this changes the timing of the sensor expectations and can lead to phantom jam errors.
- Always lift the scanner unit by the designated handles; lifting from the sides can slightly warp the chassis and misalign the paper sensors.
- If you see a "General Error" accompanying the paper jam, this often indicates the ink carriage is stuck; do not force the carriage manually if it is locked in the home position.
