Diagnosis
The loud grinding noise in the Epson EcoTank ET-2850 is typically caused by a "slip-and-grip" cycle where the pickup roller fails to gain traction on the paper. When the rubberized surface of the roller becomes glazed with paper dust or coated in oils, it loses its coefficient of friction. The printer's internal sensors detect that the paper hasn't moved the required distance, causing the motor to over-torque or "stutter" against the drive gear, resulting in that harsh mechanical grinding sound.
This is often exacerbated by the use of high-GSM or glossy papers that leave a residue on the rollers, or by the accumulation of "paper flour"—tiny cellulose fibers that shed from standard 20lb office paper. To confirm this is the issue, observe the roller during a feed attempt; if the roller spins rapidly but the top sheet of paper remains stationary or only nudges forward slightly before the noise starts, the roller is contaminated or worn.
How to Fix It
To resolve the grinding and restore the grip of the paper feed mechanism, follow these precise cleaning steps:
- Power down the printer completely and disconnect the AC power cord from the wall to prevent any electrical shorts during cleaning.
- Remove all remaining paper from the rear feed tray. Use a flashlight to inspect the tray for any small scraps of torn paper or foreign objects (like staples or paperclips) that may be obstructing the path.
- Locate the gray rubber pickup roller. This is the cylindrical wheel located at the base of the paper feed slot.
- Dampen a lint-free, non-abrasive microfiber cloth with distilled water. Do not use rubbing alcohol, as it can dry out the rubber and cause it to crack over time.
- Gently press the cloth against the rubber roller and rotate it manually by turning the gear or by carefully pushing the roller. Apply firm pressure to "scrub" the surface, removing the white, powdery buildup of paper dust.
- Repeat this process 3-4 times, refreshing the cloth with distilled water each time until the rubber feels "tacky" to the touch rather than slick.
- Allow the roller to air-dry for 5 minutes before reloading the paper.
- Fan the edges of your paper stack to remove static electricity and ensure the paper guides are snug against the edges of the stack without pinching it.
If That Didn't Work
- Perform a Hard Reset: Sometimes the gear timing gets slightly offset. Unplug the power cord and hold the power button down for 30 seconds to discharge the capacitors. Plug it back in and attempt a test print to see if the gears have realigned.
- Check the Paper Guide Tension: If the plastic guides in the rear tray are pushed too wide, the paper feeds at an angle, causing the roller to grip only one side of the page. This creates an uneven pull that triggers the grinding noise. Ensure the guides are exactly flush with the paper width.
- Inspect the Feed Gear: If the noise persists and sounds like plastic clicking, a small piece of debris may be lodged in the drive gear assembly. Use a can of compressed air to blow out the entire paper path from the top down to clear any hidden fragments.
- Replace the Pickup Roller: If the rubber has physically worn down (appearing smooth and concave), cleaning will not work. You will need to replace the pickup roller assembly. This involves removing the outer casing to access the feed motor assembly.

- Avoid using "paper cleaners" or chemical solvents on the rollers, as these can strip the rubber coating and lead to permanent feed failures.
- Always load paper in small batches. Overfilling the rear tray puts undue pressure on the pickup motor, which can lead to premature gear wear.
- If you frequently use heavy cardstock (over 60lb), manually feed the paper to help the motor overcome the initial inertia and prevent the grinding cycle.
- Keep the printer in a low-humidity environment; excessive moisture can make paper "clump," making it harder for the rollers to grab a single sheet.
