You can confirm this by brewing a full 12-cup pot; if the flavor returns to normal, the issue is strictly related to the low-volume brew cycle settings.
How to Fix It
\ To fix this, you must engage the "1-4 Cup" setting, which slows the water flow to increase the saturation time, ensuring the water stays hot enough to extract full flavor from a smaller amount of grounds.
- Empty the filter basket and ensure you are using a fresh #4 cone filter.
- Add the correct amount of coffee: use 1 level tablespoon of coarsely ground coffee for every 5 ounces of water. For 2 cups, use exactly 2 to 2.5 tablespoons.
- Fill the water reservoir specifically to the "4" mark or the "2" mark depending on your desired strength. Do not overfill beyond the 4-cup line if you intend to use the small-batch setting.
- Locate the "1-4 Cup" button on the control panel. Press this button; a light indicator will illuminate to show the mode is active.
- Press the "Brew" or "Hour" button to start the cycle. You will notice the water drips more slowly from the showerhead than it does during a full 12-cup brew.
