DIAGNOSIS The optical barcode reader on the brewing head is dirty or faulty. It cannot read the capsule's barcode, so it defaults to the largest brew setting.

FIX Power off and unplug. Open the brewing head. Locate the small, clear plastic window and the adjacent optical sensor inside the top of the chamber. Clean both meticulously with a dry, soft cotton swab. Ensure no coffee grounds or water residue obstruct the view. Close head and test with a known good espresso pod.

IF THAT DIDN'T WORK The default behavior indicates a failed sensor. Perform a factory reset: press the brew button seven times within five seconds. This clears the machine's memory. If the problem persists, the sensor unit requires replacement.

HEADS UP This fault is common. Third-party or recycled capsules may have faint barcodes that exacerbate the issue. Always use capsules with crisp, undamaged barcodes.
