Diagnosis
The HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw suffers from a common network instability issue rooted in Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) lease expiration. By default, the printer requests an IP address from your router that is temporary. When that lease expires or the router reassigns that specific IP to another device (like a smartphone or tablet), the printer loses its handshake with the network. Because the printer's internal network card doesn't always trigger a "re-request" effectively upon waking from sleep, it remains in an offline state until a hard reboot forces a new DHCP request. Furthermore, this specific model often experiences "deep sleep" failures where the network interface card (NIC) enters a low-power state and fails to respond to the "Wake-on-LAN" packet sent by your computer. This creates a loop where the PC thinks the printer is offline, and the printer is too "asleep" to tell the PC it is actually there. You can confirm this is the issue if the printer works immediately after a restart but disappears after 4-8 hours of inactivity.
How to Fix It
To permanently resolve this, you must move the printer from a dynamic IP to a manual, static IP address and disable the aggressive energy-saving network settings.
- On the printer control panel, navigate to Setup > Reports > Network Configuration and print the page. Note the current IP Address (e.g., 192.168.1.15) and the Subnet Mask (usually 255.255.255.0).
- Open a web browser on your computer and type that IP address directly into the address bar to access the Embedded Web Server (EWS).
- Click on the Networking tab at the top of the page.
- In the left-hand sidebar, select IPv4 Configuration.
- Change the setting from Automatic/DHCP to Manual/Static.
- Enter the IP address you noted from the report. To avoid future conflicts, change the last digit to something high, such as .200 or .210 (e.g., 192.168.1.210), provided it is within your router's range.
- Ensure the Subnet Mask and Default Gateway (your router's IP) are filled in correctly. Click Apply.
- Go to the System tab > Service > Energy Settings.
- Change the Sleep Timer to a longer duration or disable the "Auto-Off" feature if enabled to prevent the NIC from powering down completely.
- Restart the printer one last time to lock in these settings.
If That Didn't Work
- Disable IPv6: In the EWS (Embedded Web Server) under the Networking tab, find the IPv6 settings and uncheck "Enable IPv6". Many home routers struggle with IPv6 tunneling, which can cause the M283fdw to "ghost" on the network while it tries to communicate via a protocol the router isn't prioritizing.
- Update Firmware via USB: If the network is too unstable to update over Wi-Fi, download the latest firmware (.exe or .bin) from HP's support site and install it via a USB drive inserted into the port on the side of the printer. Firmware updates specifically target the "wake from sleep" bugs in the M283 series.
- Switch to Ethernet: If you are using Wi-Fi, the M283fdw's internal antenna can be prone to interference. Connect the printer directly to your router using a Cat5e or Cat6 Ethernet cable. This bypasses wireless signal drops and provides a more stable physical handshake.
- Assign a DHCP Reservation: If you cannot get the static IP to stick on the printer, log into your router's admin panel (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1). Find the "DHCP Reservations" or "Static IP" section and bind the printer's MAC address (found on the network report) to a specific IP address. This tells the router to always give the printer the same address.

- Avoid "HP Smart" for Setup: When configuring network settings, always use the EWS (web browser) rather than the HP Smart app. The app often simplifies settings and hides the advanced manual IP controls needed for stability.
- Router Reboot: After assigning a static IP, reboot your router. This clears any old ARP tables that might still be trying to send data to the old dynamic IP address.
- Power Source: Ensure the printer is plugged directly into a wall outlet or a high-quality surge protector. Undervoltage from cheap power strips can occasionally cause the network card to reset spontaneously.
