This is most commonly triggered by a failure in the seal between the removable water reservoir and the base. If the reservoir isn't seated perfectly, or if the small rubber flapper valve at the bottom is obstructed by a mineral deposit or a stray piece of debris, the pump will draw in air. You can confirm this by observing the water level; if the noise persists while the water level in the reservoir remains static (not dropping), the pump is spinning "dry" and failing to prime.
How to Fix It
To resolve the air lock and restore smooth operation, you must manually prime the pump and clear the intake path. Follow these exact steps:
- Power off the machine and unplug it from the wall outlet to reset the internal thermal sensors.
- Remove the water reservoir entirely. Locate the small black rubber flapper valve at the center-bottom of the tank. Use your finger to press the valve down and let it snap back; it should move freely without sticking. If it feels gummy, wipe it with a damp cloth.
- Fill the reservoir to the 14-cup MAX line using filtered water. Ensure the tank is pushed firmly and squarely into the base until you feel it lock into place. Any slight tilt will allow air to seep into the intake tube.
- Clear the brew basket of all coffee grounds and the gold-tone filter. You need a "clean" run to ensure no grounds are clogging the showerhead.
- Plug the machine back in and select the "Bold" setting (this increases the pump pressure for a short burst) and start a brew cycle with water only.

If That Didn't Work
If the rattling continues, the issue is likely a mechanical blockage or mineral buildup rather than a simple air lock:

Fill the reservoir with a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and filtered water. - Clear the Showerhead: Mineral deposits can clog the small holes where water exits into the filter. Use a needle or a thin paperclip to poke through each hole in the spray head located under the top lid to ensure water is flowing freely and not backing up into the pump.
- Check the Valve Seat: Inspect the receiving port on the base of the machine where the reservoir connects. If there is a buildup of slime or hard water scale around the rim, the rubber seal cannot create a vacuum. Clean the rim with a toothbrush and a mild detergent.
- Inspect for Internal Leaks: Place the machine on a dry paper towel. If you see water pooling under the base during the rattling noise, a silicone hose inside the chassis may have slipped off its fitting, causing the pump to suck air from the internal cavity. This requires a technician to open the housing and re-seat the tubing.
