Unlike the standard hum of the compressor, a grinding sound indicates that the motor is attempting to rotate the spiral auger, but it is meeting resistance from a "bridge" of ice—where a few oversized nuggets have fused together—or a foreign object trapped in the rotating mechanism. When this happens, the motor continues to apply torque to the jammed auger, which can lead to overheating or permanent stripping of the internal gears if left running. If you hear a rhythmic rattling, it may also indicate that the unit is not perfectly level, causing the internal cooling components to vibrate against the chassis, but a sudden "grinding" sound is a classic sign of an ice jam in the extrusion zone. You should unplug the unit immediately to prevent the motor from burning out.
How to Fix It
To clear the jam and restore silent operation, follow these precise steps:
- Immediate Power Down: Unplug the unit from the wall outlet. Do not simply turn it off via the power button; a full disconnect is necessary to ensure the motor stops completely.
- Clear the Basket: Remove the ice basket and any remaining nuggets to give yourself a clear view of the ice drop chute.
- The Thaw Period: Wait 20 to 30 minutes. This allows the surface layer of the ice jam to melt slightly, breaking the bond between the fused nuggets and the walls of the freezing cylinder.
- Manual Extraction: Using a plastic or silicone spatula (never use metal utensils or screwdrivers as they can puncture the cooling lines), gently reach into the drop chute. Feel for any hard, protruding chunks of ice. Carefully nudge them loose and pull them out.
- Flush the System: Fill the reservoir with fresh, filtered water. Plug the unit back in and run a "Clean" cycle if available, or simply start a new ice-making cycle.
- Listen for Normalization: Once the cycle starts, listen for the first few nuggets to drop. The grinding should be replaced by the standard mechanical whirring of the auger.
If That Didn't Work
- Perform a Hard Reset: Empty the entire water reservoir and the ice basket. Use a damp cloth to wipe down the interior of the ice chute. Let the machine sit unplugged for 2 hours to ensure a total melt of any internal "ice bridges" that may be hidden deep within the auger spiral.

- Regular Defrosting: If you plan to leave the machine unused for more than 48 hours, empty the water and run a drying cycle to prevent "ghost ice" from forming and jamming the auger upon restart.
- Ventilation Space: Ensure there is at least 3-5 inches of clearance around the sides and back of the unit. Overheating can cause the internal components to expand, potentially leading to misalignment and rattling.
