Mushy, "slushy" nuggets on the EUHOMY Nugget Ice Maker typically occur when the ice is ejected from the freezing cylinder before the core has fully crystallized. This creates a "shell" of ice with a liquid or semi-liquid center, resulting in nuggets that melt almost instantly upon touching your tongue rather than having that signature chewable, compressed texture found in commercial sonic-style machines. This is primarily caused by a failure in the thermal exchange process. If the ambient air surrounding the unit is too warm, the condenser coils cannot dissipate heat efficiently, which raises the internal temperature of the refrigerant. Consequently, the freezing cylinder doesn't reach the critical sub-zero temperature required to harden the ice before the auger pushes the nuggets out. You can confirm this by feeling the sides of the machine; if the exterior casing feels excessively hot to the touch, the unit is struggling to vent heat, leading to soft ice.
How to Fix It
To achieve harder, more durable nuggets, you must optimize the thermal environment and the water chemistry of the unit. Follow these precise steps:
- Create a 6-Inch Clearance Zone: Move the ice maker so there is at least 6 inches of open air space on all sides, especially the rear vents. If the unit is pushed against a backsplash or tucked under a low cabinet, heat traps occur, causing the ice to be mushy.
- Lower the Ambient Temperature: Ensure the room temperature is below 77°F (25°C). If you are using the machine in a garage or a hot kitchen, the internal compressor will struggle. Move the unit to a climate-controlled area.
- Switch to Distilled or RO Water: High mineral content (hard water) lowers the freezing point and creates "air pockets" in the ice. Drain the reservoir completely, wipe it down, and refill it with distilled water or water from a Reverse Osmosis (RO) system.
- Perform a Hard Reset: Turn the unit off and unplug it from the wall for exactly 30 minutes. This allows the refrigerant pressures to equalize and the internal components to cool down completely.
- Pre-Chill the Unit: After plugging it back in, let the machine run for 2 hours without removing any ice from the basket. This allows the internal thermal mass to stabilize, ensuring subsequent batches are harder.
If That Didn't Work
- Clean the Condenser Vents: Use a vacuum cleaner or a can of compressed air to blow out the dust from the rear intake vents. Dust buildup acts as an insulator, preventing the machine from cooling the refrigerant, which directly leads to soft, wet ice.
- Run a Deep Descale Cycle: Mineral scale buildup inside the freezing cylinder prevents the metal from transferring cold to the water efficiently. Fill the reservoir with a mixture of white vinegar and water (1:1 ratio), run the "Auto-Cleaning" cycle, and then run two additional cycles with plain water to rinse.
- Check the Water Level Sensor: Ensure the water is filled to the "Max" line but not over it. If the water level is too low, the pump may introduce air bubbles into the freezing cylinder, which creates a porous, soft ice structure rather than a dense nugget.
- Verify Power Stability: Plug the unit directly into a wall outlet rather than a power strip or extension cord. Voltage drops can cause the compressor to run inefficiently, meaning the cylinder never reaches the optimal temperature for hard ice.
