You can, but it requires manually operating the lower guard, which is a specific procedure. This saw allows for special cuts like plunge cuts, but you have to do it right.
Here's how:
- Retract the lower guard manually using the retracting handle and hold it in the open position.
- With the blade clear of the workpiece, start the saw and let it reach full speed.
- Carefully lower the spinning blade onto the material at your starting point. As soon as the blade enters the material, you must release the lower guard handle so the guard can operate automatically for the rest of the cut.
Important: For all other normal sawing, the lower guard should operate automatically. You only manually retract it for the initial plunge on these special cuts.
HEADS UP: Before attempting this, make sure your lower guard is in perfect working order. It must move freely and close instantly. If it's sluggish or damaged, get it serviced first. And always, always wear eye protection.
