Diagnosis
The "faint click" you hear is the electronic trigger switch engaging the relay, but the current is not reaching the motor windings. In the Makita XSH03Z, this specific symptom typically indicates a break in the electrical circuit between the battery terminals and the motor. Because the relay is clicking, the switch itself is receiving a signal, but the high-amperage path required to spin the blade is interrupted. This is most commonly caused by carbon buildup or oxidation on the battery terminal pins, or a failure in the battery's internal Protection Circuit Module (PCM). If the battery detects a short or an over-current situation, it will trip a safety lockout, allowing the low-voltage trigger electronics to function (the click) while blocking the high-voltage power to the motor. You can confirm this by swapping the battery with a known-working 18V LXT pack; if the tool spins with a different battery, the original pack's PCM has tripped or failed. If the tool still clicks with multiple batteries, the failure is internal to the saw, likely a burnt lead or a failed capacitor in the motor controller.
How to Fix It
Follow these steps to isolate and resolve the power delivery failure:
- Remove the battery pack and inspect the tool's terminal slots. Use a can of compressed air to blow out any sawdust or metallic debris that may be preventing a flush connection.
- Inspect the battery's gold-plated terminals for "arcing" marks (small black pits or burns). If present, use a cotton swab dipped in 90% isopropyl alcohol to clean the contacts thoroughly.
- Perform a "Hard Reset" on the battery: Place the battery on the DC18RC Rapid Optimal Charger. Even if the lights indicate it is full, let it sit for 10 minutes to reset the internal PCM logic.
- Check the blade for physical obstructions. Manually rotate the blade (with the battery removed) to ensure the arbor nut isn't over-tightened or the blade isn't jammed against the base plate, which could trigger the electronic overload protection.
- Re-insert the battery and apply firm pressure until the locking tabs engage fully. Pull the trigger in short, rapid bursts to see if the motor "kicks," which can sometimes clear a stuck relay contact.
If That Didn't Work
- Replace the Trigger Switch Assembly: If the click is present but no power flows, the internal contacts of the switch may have carbonized. You will need to remove the motor housing screws and replace the trigger assembly (Part No. associated with the XSH03 series). Check for frayed wires leading from the switch to the motor.
- Inspect the Motor Brushes: While the XSH03Z is designed for high efficiency, the brushes can wear down or become spring-stuck. Remove the brush caps on the side of the motor housing. If the carbon blocks are shorter than 5mm or are not making firm contact with the commutator, the motor will not spin despite the switch clicking.
- Check for a Blown Thermal Fuse: If the saw was used heavily just before this happened, the internal thermal fuse may have popped. This requires opening the motor casing and using a multimeter to check for continuity across the fuse. If there is no continuity, the fuse must be replaced.
- Test with a High-Capacity Battery: Some older 1.5Ah or 3.0Ah batteries may not provide the initial "surge" current required to break the static friction of the XSH03Z motor. Try a 5.0Ah or 6.0Ah LXT battery to rule out voltage sag.

- Always remove the battery before opening the housing; the XSH03Z contains capacitors that can hold a charge even after the battery is removed.
- Avoid using conductive lubricants (like graphite spray) near the battery terminals, as this can cause a short circuit.
- Ensure the blade is installed with the teeth facing forward; installing a blade backward can put undue stress on the motor and trip the electronic protection.
- Periodically blow out the motor vents with compressed air every 20 hours of use to prevent sawdust buildup from overheating the relay.
