Diagnosis
The Makita XSH03Z does not utilize a dedicated fuse for the LED worklight. The lighting circuit is integrated directly into the primary trigger switch assembly. When the trigger is depressed, power is routed simultaneously to the motor and the LED module. If the saw is cutting normally but the light is dead, the failure is isolated to either the LED diode itself, the wiring harness connecting the switch to the lamp, or a failure in the internal current-limiting resistor. In most cases, the failure is caused by mechanical vibration or impact. Because the LED is positioned near the blade guard and the motor housing, it is subject to constant high-frequency vibration and fine sawdust infiltration. Over time, the solder joints on the small LED PCB (Printed Circuit Board) can crack, or the thin gauge wires can chafe against the internal magnesium housing, leading to an open circuit. You can confirm this by checking if the light flickers when you gently tap the housing near the light lens; if it does, you have a loose connection rather than a burnt-out diode.
How to Fix It
Since the LED is a sealed component, you cannot replace the bulb alone; you must replace the LED assembly or repair the wiring. Follow these steps to resolve the issue:
- Remove the 18V LXT battery and ensure the saw is completely powered down.
- Using a T15 Torx driver, remove the external housing screws. Pay close attention to the screws on the side of the motor housing and the base plate.
- Carefully lift the upper housing away from the motor. Be cautious not to yank the wires connecting the trigger switch to the main board.
- Locate the LED module situated near the front of the tool, just above the blade guard assembly.
- Inspect the two thin wires leading from the trigger switch to the LED. Look for any pinch points or frayed insulation where the wire passes through the housing gaps.
- If the wiring is intact, disconnect the LED module from the main harness. If the module is soldered, use a soldering iron to desolder the leads.
- Install a replacement LED assembly (Part No. specific to XSH03Z series). Ensure the lens is seated flush against the housing to prevent sawdust from entering the cavity.
- Reassemble the housing, ensuring no wires are pinched between the magnesium casting and the plastic shell.
- Insert the battery and test the trigger to verify the light activates.
If That Didn't Work
- Inspect the Trigger Switch: If a new LED module fails to light up, the failure is likely inside the trigger switch itself. There is a small internal contact that diverts power to the light; if this contact is carbon-scored or bent, the light will stay off. You will need to replace the entire switch assembly.
- Check for Continuity: Use a digital multimeter set to Ohms (Ω). Place the probes on the LED harness wires while the trigger is depressed. If you see "OL" (Open Loop), there is a break in the wire between the switch and the light.
- Clean the Lens Assembly: In rare cases, the LED is functioning, but a thick layer of solidified resin or compressed sawdust has packed behind the clear lens, blocking the light. Use compressed air to blow out the LED cavity from the outside.
- Verify Battery Voltage: While unlikely if the motor is running, a severely degraded battery cell can sometimes cause voltage drops that affect auxiliary components first. Test with a fully charged 5.0Ah or 6.0Ah LXT battery to rule out power fluctuations.
Heads Up
- Avoid using solvent-based cleaners on the LED lens, as these can cloud the plastic and permanently dim the light output.
- When reassembling the tool, ensure the wiring harness is tucked into its designated channels; a pinched wire can cause a short that may blow the main motor controller.
- Keep the area around the LED lens clear of adhesive tape or sawdust buildup to ensure maximum visibility on your cut line.
- Always remove the battery before opening the casing to prevent accidental trigger activation, which could lead to serious injury.
