Diagnosis
You didn't break it. White or blue smoke from a brand-new Honda HRN216VKA is almost always caused by excess oil in the crankcase, a frequent occurrence with factory-prepped engines. This can happen from residual test-run oil or from accidentally overfilling during your initial setup.
How to Fix It
First, ensure the mower is on a level surface. Check the oil level using the dipstick (wipe it clean, insert without screwing it in). If the level is above the "Full" mark, you need to drain the excess. To do this safely:
- Remove the oil filler cap.
- Place a small drain pan under the mower's oil drain port, located on the side of the engine.
- Carefully open the drain plug with a wrench and allow a small amount of oil to drain out. Recheck the level frequently with the dipstick until it's exactly at the "Full" mark.
- Reinstall and tighten the drain plug securely, then replace the oil filler cap.
If That Didn't Work
If correcting the oil level doesn't stop the smoke within a few minutes of operation, the issue may be different. Confirm you are using fresh, unleaded gasoline. If the mower was stored on its side, oil may have migrated into the cylinder; remove the spark plug, pull the starter cord several times to expel any oil, clean the plug, and reinstall it. Persistent smoke could indicate a faulty crankcase breather assembly allowing oil into the intake, which requires professional service.

Never add oil to the level indicated on the dipstick right after running the engine; always wait a few minutes for oil to drain back into the crankcase for an accurate reading. Overfilling can cause serious engine damage beyond just smoking.
