The slow brew cycle in your Black & Decker 12-cup digital coffee maker is almost always caused by "scaling," which is the accumulation of calcium and magnesium deposits from your tap water. Over time, these minerals crystallize inside the narrow aluminum heating tube and the showerhead spray holes. Because the internal diameter of these tubes is very small, even a thin layer of mineral buildup significantly restricts water flow, forcing the machine to struggle to push water through the system. You can confirm this by looking at the showerhead (the part that drips water onto the grounds). If you see white, chalky residue around the holes, or if you notice that the water is barely dripping even when the machine is fully heated, you have a scale blockage. In some cases, the "slow drip" is actually caused by an oversized coffee grind or a compacted filter bed, but if the water is barely leaving the reservoir, the issue is internal mineral calcification.
How to Fix It
To restore full flow, you need to perform a deep chemical descale to dissolve the calcium carbonate. Do not use soap, as this will leave a chemical taste in your morning brew.
- Empty the water reservoir completely and remove any old coffee grounds and the washable filter basket.
- Mix a descaling solution: Combine 50% white distilled vinegar and 50% filtered water. Fill the reservoir to the 12-cup "MAX" line with this mixture.
- Place the glass carafe on the warming plate and press the "Brew" or "Start" button to begin the cycle.
- Allow the machine to run for about half of the brew cycle (until the carafe is half full), then turn the machine OFF and unplug it from the wall.
- Let the machine sit idle for 30 to 60 minutes. This "soak phase" is critical because it allows the acetic acid in the vinegar to break down the hardened mineral deposits inside the heating element.
- Plug the machine back in and finish the brew cycle, allowing the remaining solution to flow through completely.
- Run two full cycles of plain, cold filtered water through the machine to rinse out all remaining vinegar scent and taste.
If That Didn't Work
- Check the Filter Density: If the machine is flowing well but the coffee is dripping slowly from the basket, you are likely using a "Fine" grind. Switch to a "Medium" or "Coarse" grind. If the grounds are too powdery, they create a mud-like seal that prevents water from passing through, regardless of how clean the machine is.
- Clean the Showerhead Manually: Use a thin sewing needle or a paperclip to gently poke into the small holes of the spray head. Sometimes a specific piece of mineral scale or a stray coffee bean fragment blocks a primary jet, slowing the overall distribution.
- Inspect the Basket Drainage: Ensure the washable filter basket is not warped and that the holes at the bottom are not clogged with oily residue. Scrub the basket with a nylon brush and mild detergent to ensure there is zero resistance at the exit point.
- Try a Commercial Descaler: If vinegar fails, use a citric-acid-based commercial descaling powder. These are more aggressive than vinegar and can dissolve heavier "rock-like" deposits that acetic acid cannot penetrate.

- Water Quality Matters: If you live in a hard-water area, descale your machine every 30 to 60 days. Waiting until the brew is slow usually means the buildup is severe.
- Avoid Metal Scrubbers: Never use steel wool or abrasive pads on the washable filter basket, as this can create micro-tears in the mesh that allow coffee grounds to leak into your pot.
- Filter Choice: If using paper filters in addition to the washable basket, ensure they are the correct size. An oversized filter can fold over and block the water flow from the showerhead.
- Power Safety: Always ensure the machine is completely cool before attempting to manually clean the internal spray head to avoid steam burns.
