my ecobee premium keeps pausing my ac because it thinks a window is open, but all windows are closed. what gives?

— asked by Casey

The 'Pause when Open' feature is being triggered by a door or window SmartSensor. This feature requires a Smart Security subscription and SmartSensors for doors/windows.

Diagnosis and fix:

  1. Check your eco+ settings. See which sensors are participating in the feature. All are included by default.
  2. Unselect the sensor that is causing the false trigger. Unselecting all sensors turns the feature off completely.

If that didn't work: Verify the sensor's status. The HVAC pauses when a sensor reports 'open' for more than 5 minutes. Ensure the physical sensor is properly closed and its magnet is aligned.

Important notes:

  • The feature requires internet. If the thermostat is offline, it won't pause, but it will engage immediately when internet returns.
  • If a pause is triggered and then internet is lost, the HVAC will still resume when the sensor is closed.
  • This feature is not affected by the eco+ savings preference slider.
