my ecobee thermostat is reading a different temperature than my thermometer, how do i fix this?

— asked by Jamie

DIAGNOSIS: The thermostat sensor has a +/- 1°F variance. Warm or cold air from the wall cavity can also influence it.

FIX: First, seal the hole where the wires pass through the wall with plumber's putty. To adjust the reading:

  1. Go to MAIN MENU > SETTINGS > INSTALLATION SETTINGS > THRESHOLDS.
  2. Select TEMPERATURE CORRECTION.
  3. Apply an offset up to +/- 10°F to match your trusted thermometer.

IF THAT DIDN'T WORK: If you have SmartSensors paired, the displayed temperature is an average. Compare the thermostat sensor alone. Go to MAIN MENU > SETTINGS > SENSORS to view individual sensor readings and see which one is off.

HEADS UP: When validating, only compare the thermostat sensor reading to your thermometer. The average temperature shown with paired sensors will be different.
