Essentially, the machine's "brain" has encountered a data conflict and has entered a safety mode to prevent the heating element from overheating without a functioning timer or sensor. This typically happens due to a "ghost" charge in the capacitors after a power surge, or a temporary glitch in the firmware during the transition between the single-cup and carafe modes. If the unit was recently moved or if the water reservoir is not seated perfectly, the sensor may trigger this state to prevent a dry-fire scenario. You can confirm it is a logic error if the buttons are completely unresponsive and the display does not change regardless of which side (single-cup or carafe) you attempt to activate.
How to Fix It
To clear the logic error and reset the control board, you must perform a hard power discharge to wipe the temporary memory.
