Diagnosis
The flashing red light on the Free Village Countertop Ice Maker is the "Add Water" indicator. This occurs when the internal water-level sensor—typically a floating magnetic switch or a capacitive probe—fails to detect a sufficient volume of water to prime the pump for a new freezing cycle. If the light is flashing, the machine has entered a safety lockout mode to prevent the pump from running dry, which would cause the motor to overheat and burn out. This failure often happens for one of three reasons: the water level has actually dropped below the minimum threshold, the sensor is stuck due to mineral buildup (limescale), or the reservoir is not seated correctly against the sensor pins. You can confirm this by checking if the pump makes a brief "humming" sound before the light starts flashing; if it hums and then stops, the machine is attempting to draw water but failing to find it, triggering the red alert.
How to Fix It
To resolve the water shortage error and reset the cycle, follow these precise steps:
- Press the Power button to turn the unit off completely. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet to clear the temporary electronic memory.
- Remove the ice basket and the water reservoir. Check the water level against the translucent side markings. The water must be strictly between the MIN and MAX lines. If it is even a millimeter below the MIN line, the sensor will not trigger.
- Fill the reservoir with filtered water up to approximately 3/4 of the way to the MAX line. Avoid overfilling, as this can cause leakage into the internal electronics.
- Inspect the bottom of the reservoir for any debris or slime buildup. Use a damp cloth to wipe the exterior base and the area where the reservoir connects to the machine's chassis.
- Slide the reservoir back into the unit with a firm push. You should feel a slight "click" or a snug fit; if the reservoir is skewed, the sensor cannot read the water level.
- Plug the unit back in, press the Power button, and then press the "Select" button to choose your ice size (Small or Large). The red light should vanish, and the pump should engage immediately.
If That Didn't Work
- Perform a Descaling Cycle: Mineral deposits from hard water can coat the sensor, making it "blind" to the water level. Fill the reservoir with a mixture of 50% white distilled vinegar and 50% warm water. Run a full cycle, then let the solution sit in the reservoir for 30 minutes before draining and rinsing. This dissolves calcium carbonate buildup on the probes.
- Manually Reset the Float: If your model uses a floating sensor, a small piece of debris may be pinning the float in the "down" position. Gently shake the reservoir or use a clean toothpick to ensure the float moves freely up and down.
- Check for Air Locks: If you recently refilled the unit after it ran completely dry, an air bubble may be trapped in the pump line. Turn the unit off, remove the reservoir, and quickly pour a small amount of water directly into the internal well where the reservoir sits to "prime" the pump, then reinsert the reservoir and restart.
- Verify Power Stability: Ensure the unit is plugged directly into a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or extension cord. Low voltage can cause the sensor logic board to glitch, triggering false "Add Water" warnings.
Heads Up
- Water Quality: Always use filtered or bottled water. Using tap water with high mineral content will lead to frequent red-light errors and will eventually clog the narrow internal tubing.
- Avoid Overfilling: Filling past the MAX line can cause water to overflow into the internal cooling vents, which may lead to a short circuit or permanent motherboard failure.
- Cleaning Frequency: Clean the ice basket and reservoir every two weeks with mild soap to prevent biofilm buildup, which can interfere with the sensor's accuracy.
- Ventilation: Ensure there are at least 6 inches of open space around the side and back vents. Overheating can sometimes cause the control board to trigger erratic sensor readings.
