Unlike a sudden burst, a slow leak is often caused by "surface tension creep," where water overflows the internal reservoir rim due to an improperly seated tank or a buildup of mineral scale that prevents the tank from flushing flush against the chassis. The root cause is often a hairline crack in the plastic reservoir base or a perished O-ring on the intake valve. When the pump activates to move water to the freezing pins, any gap in the seal allows water to seep into the internal chassis. Because the unit is enclosed, this water pools at the lowest point of the machine's base before eventually leaking out from the bottom seams onto your countertop. You can confirm this by drying the unit completely, placing it on a piece of brown cardboard, and running one cycle; the cardboard will reveal exactly which corner or seam the water is exiting from.
How to Fix It
To resolve the leak and prevent permanent water damage to your cabinetry, follow these precise steps:
- Power down the unit and unplug it from the wall outlet immediately to prevent electrical shorts. Remove the ice basket and empty all remaining water from the reservoir.
- Extract the water reservoir and inspect the bottom perimeter. Use a flashlight to look for "stress whitening" (small white lines in the plastic), which indicates a hairline crack. If a crack is found, use a food-grade waterproof epoxy to seal the breach.
- Inspect the intake valve—the small rubber gasket where the reservoir meets the pump mechanism. If there is slime or mineral buildup, scrub it with a mixture of white vinegar and water using a cotton swab to ensure a vacuum-tight seal.
- Check the drain plug at the bottom rear of the machine. Ensure the rubber stopper is pushed firmly into its housing and hasn't been displaced by a bump or accidental impact.
- Perform a "deep flush" by filling the reservoir with a solution of 2 tablespoons of citric acid dissolved in 1 liter of warm water. Run this through a full cycle to clear any calcium deposits that may be causing water to divert over the edges of the internal plumbing.
