Diagnosis
Your Hamilton Beach 2-Way's overflow is almost always caused by a water flow issue. The most common culprit is the machine not being perfectly level, as the internal water reservoir needs gravity to distribute water evenly over the grounds. If it's tilted, water pours too fast into one area of the basket, causing it to clog and overflow. Other potential causes include using too fine a coffee grind, overfilling the reusable filter or basket with grounds, or a mineral buildup from hard water clogging the showerhead.
How to Fix It
First, ensure the machine is on a completely flat, stable surface. Check that all four feet are touching firmly. Next, examine your brewing setup:
- For the single-serve side, ensure you're using the correct cup size setting and that your reusable pod or K-cup adapter isn't overfilled or packed too tightly with grounds.
- For the carafe side, use a medium-coarse grind and do not exceed the maximum fill line on the included scoop or basket. Never tap or press down on the grounds.
- Run a brewing cycle with just water (no coffee) to flush the system. If the water streams evenly from the showerhead, the internal path is clear.
If That Didn't Work
Persistent overflow points to a clog or obstruction. Descale the machine using a solution of equal parts white vinegar and water (or a commercial descaling product). Run the solution through a full brew cycle into the carafe, then run 2-3 cycles with fresh water to rinse. Also, inspect the small showerhead (where the hot water comes out) for any visible coffee grounds or mineral deposits and clean it with a damp cloth.
Heads Up
Always let the machine, carafe, and any spilled coffee cool completely before cleaning to avoid burns. Never immerse the main unit in water. If the overflow continues after descaling and proper use, the internal water valve may be faulty and require service.
