Diagnosis
The single, sharp clicking noise when you pull the starter cord, instead of the engine turning over, indicates the engine's internal components are mechanically locked. For the Honda HRN216VKA, this is almost always caused by the engine being started or run without sufficient oil, leading to a partial or complete seizure. The engine was shipped without oil, and attempting to start it dry causes immediate metal-on-metal damage.
How to Fix It
First, ensure the mower is on a level surface. Locate the yellow oil filler cap/dipstick on the side of the engine. Unscrew it and pour the entire bottle of Honda 10W-30 oil (included with the mower) into the engine. Reinstall and tighten the dipstick. Next, find and remove the bright-colored warning hang tag attached near the recoil starter. Finally, pull the blade control lever back firmly against the handlebar and hold it there while briskly pulling the starter cord. The engine should now turn over and start.
If That Didn't Work
If the engine still clicks and won't turn, double-check the fuel system. Ensure the red fuel valve under the fuel tank is turned to the "ON" position. If the engine was run dry for more than a few seconds, the damage may be more severe. You may need to have a small engine technician assess the cylinder and piston for scoring. As a last self-check, ensure the mower's blade is not jammed by debris, preventing the engine from rotating.

After adding oil and starting, some white or blue smoke from the muffler is normal as excess oil burns off. However, persistent smoke indicates overfilling. Always check the oil level with the dipstick (screwed in, not resting on the threads) and maintain it between the upper and lower marks. Never run the engine without the proper oil level.
