my instant pot pro just says ‘food burn’ and shuts off every time i try to pressure cook, even with plenty of liquid.

DIAGNOSIS That's the safety sensor kicking in because it detects something thick or starchy scorching on the bottom of the inner pot, interrupting the heating cycle. It's super sensitive on the Pro model.

FIX 1) Unplug the pot and let it cool. 2) Carefully remove the inner pot—don't forget the sealing ring is in the lid. 3) Check the bottom heating plate inside the cooker base. Use a flashlight and look for any tiny bits of food or residue stuck to that silver disc. 4) Wipe it clean with a damp cloth, then dry it thoroughly. 5) Also, make sure your inner pot is sitting completely flat and level when you put it back in. That sensor needs perfect contact.

IF THAT DIDN'T WORK Try the 'Pot-in-Pot' method. Put your food in a separate heat-safe bowl or pan, place it on the steam rack, and add a cup or two of water to the main inner pot. This keeps all the thick sauce away from the bottom sensor.

HEADS UP For recipes with tomato sauce, beans, or oatmeal, always add those ingredients last, on top of your liquid. Never stir a thick mixture before cooking—layer it.
