Diagnosis
The drop in flow rate on an iSpring RCC7AK system is typically caused by a pressure drop occurring before the water even reaches the storage tank, or a failure in the tank's internal air bladder. When the flow is "weak" or "trickling," it means the system is unable to push the stored water through the final stages of filtration. Most often, this is due to "fouling" of the first-stage 5-micron sediment filter. If your incoming water has high turbidity or sediment, this filter acts as a physical barrier that becomes saturated, restricting the volume of water that can reach the RO membrane. Alternatively, if the water flows strongly for the first two seconds and then dies down, the issue is not the filters, but the pressurized storage tank. The RCC7AK uses a diaphragm tank that requires a specific air pressure (usually 7-10 PSI when empty) to push water out. Over time, these tanks can lose air pressure or suffer a ruptured bladder, meaning the water is sitting in the tank by gravity alone rather than being pushed out by air pressure. You can confirm this by lifting the heavy storage tank; if it feels full of water but barely anything comes out of the faucet, the tank pressure is the culprit.
How to Fix It
To restore your water pressure, follow these precise steps to clear the filtration path and calibrate the storage tank:
- Shut off the cold water supply valve leading into the system and close the blue storage tank valve (turn 90 degrees).
- Use the plastic housing wrench to unscrew the three pre-filter canisters. Start with the first stage (sediment). If the filter looks dark brown or slimy, replace it with a new 5-micron sediment cartridge.
- Inspect the second and third stages (Carbon Block and GAC). If there is any black "fines" or debris buildup at the bottom of the housing, rinse the housing with clean water before inserting new cartridges.
- Check the RO membrane (the large horizontal cylinder). Ensure the seal is tight and there are no leaks at the connection points.
- Address the storage tank pressure. Locate the air valve (Schrader valve) usually found behind a plastic cap on the side or bottom of the tank. Use a low-pressure tire gauge to check the PSI.
- If the pressure is below 7 PSI, use a bicycle pump or compressor to add air. With the tank empty of water, pump it up to exactly 7-10 PSI. Do not over-pressurize, as this will reduce the amount of water the tank can actually hold.
- Slowly open the feed water valve and the tank valve, then let the system recharge for 2-4 hours before testing the flow rate.
If That Didn't Work
- Replace the Automatic Shut-Off Valve (ASO): If the ASO valve is malfunctioning, it may be restricting flow or failing to signal the system to stop producing water, leading to a "stuck" state where the tank never fully fills. Replace this small plastic component if you hear constant dripping or humming from the drain line.
- Check the Flow Restrictor: The flow restrictor on the waste line can become clogged with mineral scale. If the waste water stops flowing entirely while the system is trying to produce water, the RO membrane cannot "flush" impurities, causing the system to choke. Replace the flow restrictor with a new 300cc or 400cc unit depending on your specific RCC7AK version.
- Inspect the Faucet Aerator: It sounds simple, but the designer faucet included with the RCC7AK has a very small aperture. Mineral buildup (calcium/lime) can clog the tip of the faucet. Unscrew the faucet head and soak it in white vinegar for two hours to clear any obstructions.
- Replace the Storage Tank: If you add air to the tank and it leaks out within 24 hours, or if water squirts out of the air valve when you press the pin, the internal bladder has ruptured. No amount of pumping will fix this; you must replace the entire tank assembly.
Heads Up
- Filter Schedule: To prevent pressure drops, replace the three pre-filters every 6 months. Waiting until the flow slows down often means the RO membrane has already been damaged by contaminants that the saturated pre-filters failed to catch.
- Sanitization: Whenever you open the housings to replace filters, wipe the inside of the canisters with a clean cloth and a small amount of food-grade sanitizer to prevent biofilm buildup.
- Avoid Kinks: Ensure the polyethylene tubing is not pinched or kinked behind the cabinetry. A single sharp bend in the 1/4" tubing can reduce your flow rate by 50% or more.
- TDS Monitoring: If you have a TDS meter, check the water quality after a pressure drop. If the TDS is high AND the pressure is low, your membrane is likely fouled and needs replacement regardless of the pre-filter status.
