The chalky or metallic taste you are experiencing with the iSpring RCC7AK is typically caused by "mineral fines"—microscopic particles of calcium carbonate and magnesium that shed from the remineralization media during the initial saturation period. Because the RCC7AK uses a high-density calcite and magnesium blend in the final stage to raise pH and add alkalinity, these loose particles can enter the water stream if the filter hasn't been properly purged, resulting in a distinct "dusty" or alkaline taste that mimics chalk. If this is happening after months of normal use, the diagnosis shifts toward "channeling" or media exhaustion. Channeling occurs when water carves a permanent path through the mineral bed rather than flowing evenly, causing an inconsistent release of minerals or allowing trapped air pockets to affect the taste. In rare cases, if the preceding membranes or carbon blocks have failed, contaminants can reach the remineralization stage and react with the minerals, creating a metallic tang. You can confirm a new-filter issue if the taste is strongest immediately after the system has been sitting idle for several hours.
How to Fix It
To eliminate the chalky taste, you must perform a deep-flush of the 6th stage remineralization canister. This is not a simple "run the water for a minute" process; it requires a sustained flow to clear the media bed.
- Ensure your storage tank is completely full. If the tank is empty, the pressure will be too low to effectively purge the fines from the remineralization filter.
- Open the RO faucet fully and let the water run continuously. Do not turn it off and on; maintain a steady, high-velocity stream.
- Run the water for a minimum of 30 to 45 minutes. This is critical to wash away the loose calcite dust and stabilize the mineral release rate.
- While the water is running, gently shake the remineralization filter canister (the final stage) every 10 minutes. This agitates the media and helps release trapped air bubbles and clumps of fines.
- Once the time has elapsed, shut off the faucet and let the system sit for 2 hours.
- Re-open the faucet and discard the first two glasses of water before tasting. The water should now have a crisp, neutral profile.
If That Didn't Work
- Check for Membrane Breakthrough: If the taste is metallic rather than chalky, your RO membrane (Stage 3) may be failing. Use a TDS meter to test the water coming out of the system. If the TDS is higher than 10% of your tap water's TDS, the membrane is leaking contaminants into the remineralization stage. Replace the membrane immediately.
- Verify Filter Installation: Ensure the remineralization filter is seated perfectly straight in its housing. If it is tilted, water will "channel" around the edges of the media rather than flowing through it, leading to inconsistent mineral concentrations and off-tastes.
- Replace the Post-Carbon Filter: The 5th stage (GAC post-carbon) is designed to polish the water before it hits the remineralization stage. If this filter is saturated, organic compounds will pass through and react with the alkaline media. Replace the post-carbon filter and then re-flush the remineralization stage.
- Full System Sanitization: If the taste is "musty" or metallic, there may be biofilm buildup in the lines. Sanitize the system using a food-grade bleach solution or a specialized RO sanitizing kit, then replace all pre-filters.

- Replacement Cycle: The remineralization filter typically lasts 6 to 12 months depending on your water volume. If you notice the taste returning or the water becoming "flat," it is time to replace the 6th stage canister.
- TDS Increase: Do not be alarmed if your TDS meter shows a higher reading after the remineralization stage than it does before. This is the intended function of the RCC7AK; it is adding healthy minerals back into the purified water.
- Air Bubbles: Cloudy water is common after replacing the remineralization filter. This is just trapped air (micro-bubbles) and is not related to the chalky taste; it will clear on its own within a week of use.
- Avoid Over-Tightening: When replacing the 6th stage, hand-tighten the fittings. Over-tightening the plastic housings can cause hairline cracks that lead to slow leaks or air infiltration.
