The flickering or dimming of the Stelpro Maestro SMT402 display is almost always a symptom of "power cycling" or voltage instability. Because this is a smart thermostat with a backlit LCD and Wi-Fi connectivity, it requires a constant, stable 24VAC power supply. When the screen flickers or remains dim despite brightness settings, it means the device is failing to draw enough current to maintain the backlight and the wireless radio simultaneously. This usually happens when the thermostat is attempting to "power steal" from the heating/cooling circuits because the Common (C) wire is either missing, disconnected, or improperly seated. In many installations, the SMT402 is wired without a dedicated C-wire, relying on the R-wire for power. However, as the Wi-Fi chip polls the server or the screen brightness is increased, the current draw exceeds what the system can provide via power stealing, causing the voltage to drop below the operational threshold. This creates a loop where the device reboots or dims the screen to save power, resulting in the flickering effect. You can confirm this by checking if the flickering intensifies when you attempt to connect to Wi-Fi or navigate deep into the settings menus.
How to Fix It
To resolve this, you must ensure a dedicated 24VAC path is established between the transformer and the thermostat. Follow these exact steps:
- Shut off the power to your HVAC system at the circuit breaker to avoid blowing the 3-amp or 5-amp fuse on the control board.
- Gently pull the SMT402 faceplate off the wall mounting base.
- Inspect the wiring terminals. Locate the wire connected to the R terminal (Power) and the C terminal (Common). If the C-terminal is empty, you have found the root cause.
- If a C-wire exists but is not connected, strip exactly 1/4 inch of insulation from the end of the wire. Insert it firmly into the C-terminal and tighten the screw until the wire is clamped securely; give it a light tug to ensure it doesn't slide out.
- If no C-wire is available in your wall, you must install a 24V C-Wire Adapter (such as the Stelpro-compatible add-a-wire kits) at the furnace/air handler end.
- Verify the voltage using a multimeter. Set the meter to AC voltage and probe the R and C terminals. You should see a steady reading between 24V and 28V AC. If the reading fluctuates or is below 22V, the issue is with your transformer.
- Snap the faceplate back onto the base and restore power. Navigate to Settings > Display and test the brightness levels to ensure the flicker has ceased.
If That Didn't Work
- Check the HVAC Transformer: If you have a confirmed C-wire but the screen is still dim, your 24VAC transformer may be failing or undersized for the number of accessories (like smart vents or humidifiers) on your loop. Replace the transformer with a higher VA (Volt-Ampere) rated model to ensure enough current is available for the SMT402.
- Inspect for Wire Corrosion: In older homes, the copper wiring in the walls can oxidize. If the wires look dull or black at the tips, cut back the wire to a fresh section, strip it, and use a small amount of dielectric grease on the connection to prevent future voltage drops.
- Test with a Plug-in 24V Transformer: To rule out a faulty thermostat hardware issue, temporarily bypass the HVAC system by connecting a standalone 24V AC plug-in transformer directly to the R and C terminals. If the screen stabilizes, the problem is definitively within your furnace/air handler wiring.
- Perform a Factory Reset: In rare cases, a firmware glitch can cause the display driver to malfunction. Hold the reset button (or follow the specific button sequence in the system menu) to wipe the settings and re-initialize the hardware.

- Avoid "Power Stealing": Never rely on power-stealing configurations for the SMT402 if you plan on using high brightness or frequent Wi-Fi polling; it will lead to premature component failure or intermittent heating/cooling triggers.
- Check the Fuse: If the screen is completely dark and won't turn on after wiring changes, check the automotive-style blade fuse on your HVAC control board. A short during installation often pops this fuse.
- Wire Gauge: Ensure you are using 18-gauge thermostat wire. Using thinner wire over long distances can cause a voltage drop that leads to the exact dimming issue you are experiencing.
- Firmware Updates: Once power is stabilized, immediately check for firmware updates via the app, as Stelpro occasionally releases patches to optimize power consumption of the LCD backlight.
