Diagnosis
The audible clicking sound in the Stelpro Maestro SMT402 is produced by the internal mechanical relay. This relay acts as a physical switch that closes to complete the electrical circuit to your heating element and opens to break it. While a subtle "click" is standard for this model, an excessively loud, sharp, or echoing sound usually indicates a resonance issue. Because the SMT402 has a plastic housing, the chassis can act as an amplifier if it is not properly dampened against the wall surface. In many installations, the clicking becomes "loud" because the baseplate is slightly bowed or the wall surface is uneven (common with textured drywall or old plaster). This creates a small air gap between the back of the unit and the wall, transforming the wall cavity into a sounding board that echoes the relay's mechanical snap. If the clicking is accompanied by rapid-fire "chattering" (clicking multiple times per second), it indicates a different problem: the thermostat is rapidly cycling due to a misplaced temperature sensor or a failing relay coil, which can lead to premature hardware failure.
How to Fix It
To eliminate the acoustic amplification and ensure the relay is operating within normal parameters, follow these steps:
- Carefully grip the outer edges of the SMT402 display unit and pull it straight forward to remove it from the mounting baseplate.
- Inspect the rear of the baseplate for any debris, drywall dust, or protruding wires that may be preventing the plate from sitting 100% flush against the wall.
- Check the mounting screws. If the screws are over-tightened, they can warp the plastic baseplate, creating a gap between the center of the plate and the wall. Loosen the screws by a quarter-turn to allow the plate to flatten against the surface.
- Apply a small amount of non-conductive dielectric grease or a thin strip of adhesive foam weatherstripping (1/16 inch thickness) to the back of the baseplate. This acts as a vibration dampener to absorb the mechanical shock of the relay.
- Snap the display unit back onto the baseplate, ensuring you hear a firm click and that there is no wiggle or "play" when you press on the front of the device.
If That Didn't Work
- Check the Temperature Differential: If the clicking occurs too frequently, access the advanced settings and increase the "Temperature Swing" or "Hysteresis" setting. By increasing the gap between the turn-on and turn-off temperature (e.g., from 0.5°F to 2.0°F), you reduce the frequency of relay activations, which minimizes the perceived noise.
- Inspect for Voltage Fluctuations: Use a multimeter to verify that the line voltage entering the SMT402 is stable. If the voltage is dipping significantly when the heater kicks in, the relay may struggle to latch, causing a louder, more violent mechanical snap.
- Verify Wiring Torque: Ensure the wires in the baseplate terminals are tightened to the correct torque. Loose connections can cause intermittent arcing, which may manifest as a louder-than-normal clicking sound as the relay struggles to maintain a connection.
- Hardware Replacement: If the click is accompanied by a buzzing sound or if the heater fails to engage despite the click, the internal relay coil has likely failed. Since the SMT402 is a sealed unit, the entire thermostat must be replaced.
Heads Up
- Never attempt to open the SMT402 casing to lubricate the relay; the unit is sealed for safety, and opening it will void the warranty and expose you to high-voltage components.
- Avoid installing the thermostat directly over a cold-air draft (such as a hole in the drywall where wires enter); this causes "short-cycling," where the relay clicks on and off constantly, wearing out the mechanical switch.
- Ensure you are using the correct gauge of wire (typically 12 AWG for 240V circuits) to prevent overheating at the terminals, which can warp the plastic housing and increase noise.
- Periodically vacuum the vents of the thermostat to ensure the internal thermistor isn't overheating, as heat buildup can affect the timing of the relay switch.
