The Makita XFD131 utilizes a keyless ratcheting chuck. When bits slip, it is typically caused by one of two things: improper seating of the bit or a failure in the internal ratcheting mechanism. Most commonly, users attempt to tighten the chuck without fully opening the jaws, meaning the bit is only gripping the very tip of the flutes rather than the shank. This creates a pivot point that allows the bit to spin under torque. Another possibility is "chuck glazing" or debris accumulation. Fine metal shavings or sawdust can migrate into the jaw grooves, preventing the three-jaw system from closing symmetrically. If the jaws aren't centered, the grip is off-balance, leading to a slip once the drill reaches higher RPMs. You can confirm this by inspecting the gap between the jaws; if one jaw closes further than the others, the internal gearing is compromised or obstructed.
How to Fix It
Follow these precise steps to ensure a mechanical lock on your accessory:
- Rotate the chuck collar counter-clockwise until the jaws are fully retracted. Ensure the jaws are open wide enough to accept the full diameter of your bit's shank.
- Insert the drill bit squarely into the center of the chuck. Push the bit in firmly until it reaches the back of the chuck cavity. If you are using a hex-shank driver bit, ensure it is seated deep enough that the flat edges are fully enclosed by the jaws.
- Grip the chuck collar firmly with your non-dominant hand. While maintaining a tight grip, pull the trigger in the forward (clockwise) direction for a split second. This uses the motor's torque to snap the chuck tight.
- Once the motor stops, manually rotate the collar clockwise further by hand to apply maximum tightening pressure. You should feel a distinct "click" or resistance.
- Test the grip by attempting to pull the bit out by hand; if it rotates or slides, repeat the process, ensuring the bit is perfectly perpendicular to the drill axis.
If That Didn't Work
- Deep Clean the Jaw Channels: Use a can of compressed air or a thin dental pick to clear out the three grooves where the jaws slide. Small pieces of grit or metal shards can prevent the jaws from closing fully. After cleaning, apply a single drop of light machine oil to the jaw tracks to ensure smooth movement.
- Check for Shank Wear: Inspect the drill bit itself. If the bit has been used heavily, the shank may have "scored" or worn-down flat spots. If the bit is rounded off, the chuck cannot grip it regardless of how tight you turn the collar. Try a brand new bit to determine if the issue is the tool or the accessory.
- Reset the Ratchet Mechanism: If the collar spins freely without tightening the jaws, the internal ratchet may be stuck. Firmly tap the side of the chuck with a rubber mallet while rotating the collar. This can often reseat a jumped gear inside the keyless assembly.
- Replace the Chuck Assembly: If the jaws are physically chipped or the collar no longer "clicks" into place, the internal spring and gear assembly have failed. The XFD131 chuck is a replaceable unit; you will need to remove the mounting screws and swap the entire chuck head for a new Makita OEM replacement.

- Avoid over-tightening the chuck using the trigger for extended periods, as this can strip the internal ratcheting teeth. Use the trigger for the initial snap, then finish by hand.
- Always ensure the drill is set to the correct torque clutch setting (the numbered ring) for the material you are drilling. If the clutch is set too low, it may feel like the bit is slipping when actually the motor is simply disengaging.
- Keep the chuck clear of heavy grease. While a drop of oil is good for the gears, excess grease attracts sawdust, which turns into a paste that jams the jaw mechanism.
- When switching from a large diameter bit to a small one, always open the jaws fully first to ensure the smaller bit is centered and not skewed.
