DIAGNOSIS This is the sound of the internal thermostat (a snap-disc) cycling on and off to regulate temperature. It is a normal operational sound. Excessive or erratic clicking indicates the thermostat is working harder due to temperature swings.
FIX 1. Ensure the smoker is properly preheated to your target temperature before adding food. 2. Verify the water pan is filled (acts as a heat sink). 3. Check that the top vent is only open about 1-2 inches for stable heat, not fully open or fully closed.
IF THAT DIDN'T WORK A faulty or out-of-calibration thermostat can cause rapid on/off cycling. You can test this. Set the smoker to 225°F. The clicks should be spaced several minutes apart once stabilized. If clicks occur every 10-20 seconds, the thermostat likely needs replacement (part number 990706001).
HEADS UP The clicking will always be more frequent during the initial heat-up phase as the element runs continuously. The sound should become less frequent (every few minutes) once the target temperature is reached and stabilized.
