DIAGNOSIS This is caused by the chip loader tube acting as a secondary chimney, drawing excessive oxygen. The primary cause is an obstructed exhaust vent on top of the smoker, creating a vacuum that pulls air through the loader.
FIX 1. Ensure the top exhaust vent is fully open during operation. 2. Verify the chip loader is pushed completely into its tube, forming a tight seal. 3. Only add a small handful of dry wood chips (approx. 1/4 cup) at a time. Do not overfill.
IF THAT DIDN'T WORK The chip tray or heating element may have excessive grease buildup, providing immediate fuel. Perform a thorough high-heat burn-off: run the empty smoker at 275°F for 45 minutes with the drip pan and grills removed. Scrape the element shield clean when cool.
HEADS UP Using soaked wood chips is unnecessary and counterproductive in this electric smoker. Dry chips produce the correct smoke. Soaked chips create steam, delay smoking, and promote creosote buildup.
