The "Add Water" indicator on the Northair HZB-18F is triggered by a mechanical float sensor located in the reservoir. This sensor consists of a small, white plastic buoyant cylinder that slides vertically within a guide tube. When the water level drops, the float descends, triggering a micro-switch that signals the control board to halt ice production and flash the warning light. The most common cause of a false "Add Water" reading is mineral buildup—specifically calcium and magnesium deposits—that creates friction between the float and the walls of the guide tube. When these deposits harden, they act like glue, pinning the float in the "down" position even when the tank is filled to the max line. In some cases, a small piece of debris or a stray ice shard can lodge itself under the float, preventing it from rising. You can confirm this by looking into the reservoir and attempting to gently nudge the float with a straw; if it doesn't bob freely or stays stuck at the bottom, the sensor is fouled.
How to Fix It
To resolve a stuck float sensor and clear the error light, follow these precise steps:
- Unplug the HZB-18F from the wall outlet to prevent any electrical shorts during the cleaning process.
- Remove the ice basket and empty all remaining water from the reservoir.
- Tilt the machine forward at a 45-degree angle over a sink to ensure any trapped water behind the internal walls is fully drained.
- Locate the white plastic float sensor in the reservoir. Using a clean cotton swab dipped in a 50/50 mixture of distilled white vinegar and warm water, scrub the vertical walls of the guide tube where the float slides.
- Gently push the float down and let it pop back up 5-10 times. If you feel resistance, continue applying the vinegar solution to dissolve the scale.
- Rinse the reservoir thoroughly with distilled water to remove any remaining vinegar residue.
- Fill the reservoir to the "MAX" line. Ensure the float is floating freely at the top of its track.
- Plug the unit back in and press the "Reset" or "Power" button to clear the cached error state on the PCB.
If That Didn't Work
- Perform a Deep Descale: If the float is still sticking, there may be internal scale buildup in the pump line. Fill the reservoir with 2 cups of white vinegar and 2 cups of warm water. Run one full ice-making cycle, then discard the ice. Repeat this process three times to clear the internal plumbing and the sensor housing of stubborn minerals.
- Check for Air Locks: Occasionally, an air bubble can trap the float or prevent water from reaching the sensor area. Turn the machine completely upside down for 10 seconds (with the reservoir empty) to dislodge any trapped air pockets in the sensor chamber, then restart.
- Inspect the Micro-Switch: If the float moves freely but the light remains on, the internal micro-switch may have shifted. Gently tap the side of the machine near the reservoir with the handle of a screwdriver to see if a mechanical vibration resets the switch contact.
- Test with Distilled Water: If the problem recurs quickly, your tap water has high mineral content. Switch to distilled water for one week to determine if the "Add Water" light is being triggered by rapid scale accumulation.

- Never use harsh chemical cleaners or bleach inside the reservoir, as these can degrade the plastic of the float sensor and cause it to warp or lose buoyancy.
- Avoid using a metal tool (like a screwdriver or needle) to poke the float, as scratching the interior of the guide tube creates "catch points" that will make the sensor stick more frequently.
- To prevent future failures, run a vinegar descale cycle once every 30 days if you live in a hard-water area.
- Ensure the machine is sitting on a perfectly level surface; if the HZB-18F is tilted, the float may lean against the side of the tube and stick even if the water level is correct.
