When the unit powers on but shuts down abruptly without producing ice or showing error lights, it is typically triggering a thermal overload protection circuit. This happens when the compressor exceeds a safe operating temperature, forcing a hard shutdown to prevent permanent motor failure. The primary causes are restricted airflow, dust accumulation on the condenser coils, or an ambient room temperature that is too high for the unit to dissipate heat.
How to Fix It
To resolve this and reset the thermal switch, follow these steps:
- Unplug the unit immediately and let it sit powered off for at least 60 to 90 minutes. This allows the compressor to reach a stable room temperature.
- Relocate the machine to an open area. Ensure there is a minimum of 6 inches of clearance on all sides and the rear to allow the exhaust fans to push hot air away from the chassis.
- Inspect the rear vent grilles. Use a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment or a can of compressed air to remove any dust, pet hair, or lint blocking the airflow.
- Ensure the unit is placed on a flat, level surface; tilting the unit can interfere with the refrigerant flow and cause the compressor to work harder and overheat.
If That Didn't Work
If the cycle continues to cut out after cooling and cleaning, check for these secondary issues:
- Water Level: Ensure the reservoir is filled to the "Max" line. Low water levels can occasionally cause irregular cycling.
- Internal Sensor Failure: If the unit shuts off despite being cool and well-ventilated, the internal thermal fuse or the temperature sensor may be defective, which requires a component replacement.
- Voltage Fluctuations: Ensure the unit is plugged directly into a wall outlet rather than a crowded power strip, as voltage drops can cause the compressor to stall and overheat.

Never place this ice maker inside a closed cabinet or a tight cubby while in use. Because it functions like a small refrigerator, it generates significant heat; trapping that heat creates a "sauna effect" that will repeatedly trigger the safety shutdown and eventually burn out the compressor.
