Diagnosis
The loud humming or buzzing from the back of your Maytag MER7700LZ oven is almost certainly related to the convection fan system. While the fan should produce a gentle airflow sound, a pronounced hum or buzz indicates a mechanical issue. The most common culprits are a worn-out motor bearing, a warped or loose fan blade, or a failing motor capacitor. Debris contacting the blade can also cause a loud, irregular buzzing.
How to Fix It
- Unplug the range or shut off its circuit breaker for safety.
- Remove the oven racks and inspect the rear wall. Look for the circular convection fan cover behind the heating element.
- Using a flashlight, check for and remove any visible debris like foil, food particles, or packaging materials that may be touching the fan blade.
- Gently try to wiggle the fan blade. If it has excessive side-to-side play or feels loose, the blade or its mounting hub may be damaged and need replacement.
- If the blade is clear and secure, plug the range back in, turn the oven on to a convection bake setting, and listen. If the loud hum persists, the motor itself is likely failing.
If That Didn't Work
If clearing obstructions doesn't stop the noise, the convection fan motor assembly requires service. The motor is not user-serviceable; its bearings cannot be oiled. You will need to replace the entire motor assembly. This involves disconnecting power, removing the oven's rear interior panel to access the motor mounting, disconnecting its electrical connector, and installing a new, manufacturer-approved replacement part (typically part number W11184778 for this model).

The convection fan will always run during any convection cooking mode (Convection Bake, Convection Roast) and during a self-cleaning cycle. A low, consistent whir is normal. A loud, grinding, vibrating, or intermittent humming noise is a sign of failure and should be addressed to prevent the motor from seizing completely.
