Diagnosis
This issue is almost always caused by a "Logic Lockout" within the control board. Because the Taylor Swoden 12-Cup model uses a digital timer, the machine enters a priority mode when a future brew time is set. If the "PROG" (Program) indicator is active, the machine disables the immediate "ON/OFF" trigger to prevent the user from accidentally double-brewing or interfering with the scheduled cycle. Essentially, the internal relay is waiting for the clock to hit the programmed time before it will send power to the heating element. Another possibility is a safety interlock failure. This machine features a specific sensor in the carafe foot and a lid-detection switch. If the glass carafe is not seated perfectly flush against the warming plate, or if the brew basket lid is slightly skewed, the machine will maintain the clock display (showing it has power) but will refuse to engage the pump and heater to prevent hot water from overflowing onto your counter. You can confirm this by checking if the "PROG" light is blinking or if the carafe is wobbling slightly on the base.
How to Fix It
To clear the logic lockout and force an immediate brew, follow these precise steps:
- Locate the "PROG" button on the front control panel. If the light next to it is illuminated, the machine is currently locked into a scheduled brew.
- Press and hold the "PROG" button for a full 5 seconds. Do not just tap it; you must hold it until the "PROG" light completely extinguishes. This wipes the internal memory of the scheduled start time.
- Ensure the glass carafe is pushed firmly into the center of the warming plate. Lift it up and set it back down to ensure the drip-stop valve is properly engaged.
- Check the brew basket lid. Open the top cover, remove the filter basket, and re-seat it firmly. Ensure the plastic lid snaps shut completely.
- Press the "ON/OFF" button once. The display should transition from the clock time to a blinking brew indicator, and you should hear the water begin to hiss into the reservoir.
- If you want a more intense flavor, press the "STRONG" button immediately after hitting ON/OFF; the light will illuminate, and the water flow will slow down to increase extraction.
If That Didn't Work
- Perform a Hard Power Reset. Unplug the machine from the wall outlet for exactly 60 seconds. This discharges the capacitors on the control board and clears any "ghost" programming errors that a simple button press won't fix. Plug it back in and attempt to brew without setting the clock first.
- Inspect the Water Reservoir Sensor. If the water level is too low (below the minimum 2-cup line), some versions of this board will refuse to trigger the heating element to prevent dry-firing. Fill the reservoir to the 12-cup mark and try again.
- Check for Scale Blockage. If you hear a faint humming sound but no water moves, calcium deposits may be blocking the one-way valve. Mix a solution of 50% white vinegar and 50% filtered water. Fill the reservoir and let it sit for 30 minutes, then attempt to run a cycle.
- Test the Outlet. Plug a different small appliance (like a lamp) into the same socket. If the clock is lit but the heater won't start, you might be on a tripped GFCI outlet that provides enough voltage for the LED clock but not enough amperage to power the 900W-1100W heating element.

- Avoid using "permanent" fabric filters that are too thick; these can create back-pressure that triggers the overflow sensor, causing the machine to shut down mid-brew.
- Always use filtered water. The heating element in the Taylor Swoden model is prone to lime-scale buildup, which can lead to the "clock-only" failure mode as the thermistor fails to detect heat.
- Never fill the water reservoir beyond the "MAX" line. Overfilling can cause water to seep into the internal wiring harness, leading to a short circuit that disables the brew button.
- Clean the glass carafe only with soft sponges. Scratches on the bottom of the carafe can prevent it from seating properly, which triggers the safety lockout.
