Diagnosis
The simultaneous flashing of all indicator lights on the Epson Expression Home XP-4205 is known as a "Fatal Error" or "General Error." This occurs when the printer's internal logic board detects that a mechanical component has failed to reach its intended position within the allotted time, or a sensor has been triggered unexpectedly. The printer enters this "panic mode" to prevent permanent hardware damage, such as the print head crashing into the side of the chassis or the motor burning out. Most commonly, this is triggered by a physical obstruction in the paper path or the carriage rail. Even a tiny scrap of torn paper, a staple, or a piece of adhesive label backing can block the optical sensors or jam the rollers. However, it can also be caused by an "Ink Pad End of Life" error or a carriage jam where the print head is physically stuck due to a buildup of dried ink or a foreign object (like a coin or paperclip) falling into the internal cavity. You can confirm a mechanical jam if you hear a loud grinding or clicking sound immediately before the lights start flashing.
How to Fix It
To resolve a general error on the XP-4205, you must perform a deep physical inspection and a hard power reset to clear the volatile memory.
- Power down the printer using the power button and physically unplug the power cord from the wall outlet. Wait exactly 60 seconds to allow the capacitors on the mainboard to discharge.
- Lift the scanner unit to open the printer. Use a high-lumen flashlight to inspect the entire width of the carriage path. Gently slide the print head carriage from left to right. If it resists or hits a "hard stop" before reaching the end, look for small pieces of paper or debris lodged in the rails.
- Check the "Encoder Strip"—the thin, clear plastic ribbon that runs across the width of the printer behind the carriage. If there is a smudge of grease or a drop of ink on this strip, the printer cannot track the head position, triggering the flashing lights. Carefully wipe it with a dry, lint-free microfiber cloth; do not use rubbing alcohol as it can strip the timing marks.
- Open the rear paper feed area. Reach inside and check for any curled paper scraps or "accordion" jams. Use a pair of tweezers to remove any fragments from the rubber pick-up rollers.
- Check the ink cartridge seating. Ensure all four cartridges are snapped firmly into place. A partially unseated cartridge can physically obstruct the carriage movement.
- Plug the printer back in and power it on. If the lights stop flashing, run a "Nozzle Check" from the Maintenance menu to ensure the head is aligned.
If That Didn't Work
- Perform a Hard Reset of the Ink Waste System: If the lights are flashing in a specific rhythmic pattern rather than all at once, your waste ink pads may be full. While this usually shows a specific message on the LCD, early-stage failures can trigger general errors. You will need a third-party reset utility (like WIC Reset Utility) to clear the internal counter, as this cannot be done via the onboard menu.
- Check for "Foreign Object" Intrusion: Remove the paper tray entirely and tilt the printer forward at a 45-degree angle. Often, small items like paperclips or staples fall into the chassis and lodge themselves under the carriage rail. Shake the unit gently to see if any metal objects rattle out of the bottom.
- Clean the Carriage Rail: If the carriage moves sluggishly, the lubricant may have dried or collected dust. Apply a tiny amount of synthetic grease (white lithium grease) to the metal rail and manually slide the carriage back and forth to distribute it.
- Factory Reset the Network/Internal Settings: Navigate to Settings > Restore Default Settings. This clears any corrupted print jobs in the internal buffer that might be causing the logic board to hang and trigger the error state.
Heads Up
- Never use canned air to blow out the printer; this can push paper scraps deeper into the sensor arrays, making the problem permanent.
- Avoid using "heavy" cardstock or non-standard labels that exceed 200gsm, as the XP-4205 feed rollers are prone to slipping, which triggers the "Paper Jam" fatal error.
- Always turn the printer off via the power button before unplugging it to avoid corrupting the firmware.
- If you see ink leaking onto the internal plastic, clean it immediately with a damp cloth; dried ink on the carriage path acts like glue and will cause the head to jam.
