why is my epson xp-4205 printing super faint even with brand new cartridges?

— asked by Casey

DIAGNOSIS The print head nozzles are clogged with dried ink. New cartridges won't fix this because the clog is in the printer itself, not the tanks.

FIX Run the printer's built-in head cleaning utility.

  • On the printer itself, hold the 'Stop' button for 3 seconds. The cleaning cycle will start.
  • Alternatively, on your computer, go to Printer Properties > Maintenance > Head Cleaning.
  • Run the cleaning cycle once, then print a nozzle check pattern. Repeat cleaning (max 2-3 times) if gaps remain. Let the printer sit for a few hours between cycles.

IF THAT DIDN'T WORK The clog is severe. Perform a manual head cleaning: soak a paper towel in distilled water, place it in the tray where the cartridge carrier parks, and close the printer for several hours to let the steam loosen the ink.

HEADS UP Excessive head cleaning wastes huge amounts of ink. If three cleanings don't work, stop and try method; otherwise you'll drain your new cartridges.
