Your Hamilton Beach Wave Crusher is experiencing a significant loss of rotational torque. This is almost never caused by dull blades, as blender blades work by blunt-force impact, not sharp cutting. The two most common culprits are mechanical slippage in the drive system or an electrical failure in the motor's starting circuit.
How to Fix It
Begin with the most common mechanical fix. Unplug the blender and remove the jar. Invert the base to access the underside. Locate the drive coupler—the plastic or rubber component with gear-like teeth that connects the motor shaft to the blade assembly's spline. Inspect it for stripped, rounded, or melted teeth. This part (often Hamilton Beach part #61094) wears out from heavy use and causes the motor to spin without fully engaging the blades. Order an exact replacement and install it following the same alignment procedure as the original.
If That Didn't Work
If the drive coupler is intact, the issue is likely electrical. The blender motor uses a start capacitor to provide the extra torque needed for initial spin-up, especially under load like ice. A failing capacitor results in weak, slow rotation. You'll need to open the blender base to locate this small, cylindrical, usually black component. Testing it requires a multimeter, and replacement requires basic soldering skills to disconnect the old capacitor and install a new one with matching microfarad (µF) and voltage ratings.

Never attempt to sharpen the blender blades. They are not designed for sharpening, and doing so can create dangerous metal shards, unbalance the assembly, and void any warranty. Always ensure the blender is unplugged before performing any inspection or disassembly.
