Diagnosis
The leaking and dripping issue on the Technivorm Moccamaster KBGV Select is almost always caused by a failure in the airtight seal between the carafe lid and the glass vessel. The lid is designed to trap steam to maintain brewing temperature, but when the black silicone gasket becomes degraded, shifted, or contaminated with coffee oils, it creates a gap. This allows pressurized steam to escape prematurely and disrupts the surface tension of the liquid during pouring. When you tilt the carafe, the lack of a proper seal allows air to enter the vessel unevenly, which breaks the "stream" of coffee. Instead of a clean pour from the spout, the liquid clings to the glass rim and "runs back" down the side of the carafe. You can confirm this by placing the lid on the carafe and gently pressing down; if you see the silicone ring bulging unevenly or feel a "squish" in only one section, the gasket is either improperly seated or has lost its elasticity due to heat fatigue.
How to Fix It
To restore the seal and stop the dripping, you must deep-clean the gasket and reset its position. Follow these exact steps:
- Remove the lid from the glass carafe. Turn the lid over to expose the underside where the black silicone gasket is seated in a circular groove.
- Using a blunt plastic tool or your fingernail, carefully pry the silicone gasket out of its track. Be careful not to stretch or tear the rubber.
- Submerge the gasket in a mixture of warm water and a grease-cutting dish soap. Use a soft toothbrush to scrub the gasket and the inner groove of the lid to remove accumulated coffee oils and mineral deposits that create slippery gaps.
- Rinse the gasket thoroughly with distilled water to remove any soap residue, as soap can cause the gasket to slide out of place.
- Dry both the gasket and the lid groove completely with a lint-free cloth. Any moisture trapped in the groove can prevent the gasket from seating flush.
- Press the gasket back into the groove, starting at the 12 o'clock position and working your way around. Use your thumb to firmly press the rubber into the track until it sits perfectly flush with the plastic rim.
- Place the lid back on the carafe and give it a slight clockwise twist to ensure it is locked into the optimal pouring position.
If That Didn't Work
- Replace the Gasket Assembly: If the silicone has become brittle or "flattened" over years of use, cleaning will not help. Order a replacement lid assembly (Part No. 53941-LID) rather than just the gasket, as the plastic tensioners in the lid can also warp over time.
- Check for Glass Chips: Inspect the rim of the glass carafe for microscopic chips or "flea bites" along the top edge. Even a tiny chip in the glass breaks the vacuum seal, allowing steam to escape and coffee to drip. If the rim is jagged, the carafe must be replaced.
- Adjust Pouring Angle: If the leak only happens at a specific angle, you may be tilting the carafe too slowly. The KBGV carafe requires a decisive, steady pour to engage the spout's flow dynamics; pouring too slowly allows the liquid to cling to the glass.
- Descale the Machine: While this is a carafe issue, mineral buildup in the brew basket can cause "splashing" during the brew cycle, leaving residue on the outside of the carafe rim that prevents the lid from seating correctly. Run a full descaling cycle using a citric acid-based solution.

- Avoid using abrasive scrubbers (like steel wool) on the glass rim or the silicone gasket, as scratches provide pathways for leaks to occur.
- Never put the carafe lid in a high-heat dishwasher cycle; the extreme heat can warp the plastic and degrade the silicone, leading to the exact leak you are experiencing.
- Periodically check the gasket every 3-6 months for "pitting" or cracks, especially if you use the machine daily.
- Ensure the carafe is completely dry on the outside rim before placing the lid on for a brew to ensure a tight, friction-based seal.
