Diagnosis
This issue is typically caused by a failure in the keyless chuck's internal gripping mechanism, specifically the three internal steel jaws. In the DEKOPRO 20V model, the chuck utilizes a friction-lock system. If the bit is not seated perfectly square in the center of the jaws, or if the jaws are worn down, the centrifugal force generated during high-RPM drilling causes the chuck to "walk" or loosen. This is exacerbated by the torque reaction of the motor, which can actually rotate the outer sleeve of the chuck if the internal locking teeth are stripped or fouled by sawdust and metal shavings.
To confirm the root cause, perform a "static pull test." Insert a hex-shank bit and tighten it. Attempt to pull the bit straight out of the drill with moderate force. If the bit slides out or the chuck sleeve rotates while you pull, the internal gripping teeth are either compromised or the chuck is not fully engaged. If the bit stays firm but spins during operation, you are likely dealing with "bit slippage" caused by using smooth-sided round-shank bits in a chuck designed primarily for hex-shanks or fluted bits.
How to Fix It
Follow these exact steps to ensure a secure lock and prevent the bit from ejecting during operation:
- Safety Lockout: Slide the forward/reverse toggle switch to the center (neutral) position. This prevents the motor from engaging while your hands are on the chuck. Remove the 20V battery pack from the base to ensure total power isolation.
- Clear the Jaws: Open the chuck fully by rotating the front sleeve counter-clockwise. Use a can of compressed air or a thin wire brush to clear any debris from the three internal gripping jaws. Even a small amount of sawdust can prevent the jaws from closing fully around the bit.
- Perfect Seating: Insert your drill bit. Ensure the bit is pushed all the way to the back of the chuck. If the bit is sitting too far forward, the jaws will grip the thinnest part of the shank, leading to slippage.
- The Two-Hand Lock: Grip the rear sleeve (the part closest to the drill body) firmly with your non-dominant hand to keep it stationary. Using your dominant hand, rotate the front sleeve clockwise.
- The Final Torque: Once the bit feels snug, apply a "final snap" by tightening the sleeve as hard as possible. For maximum security on stubborn materials, use the palm of your hand to give the front sleeve one last forceful clockwise twist.
If That Didn't Work
- Switch to Hex-Shank Bits: If you are using round-shank bits, they are prone to spinning in keyless chucks. Switch to 1/4" hex-shank impact bits. The flat sides of the hex shank provide significantly more surface area for the DEKOPRO jaws to bite into, virtually eliminating slippage.
- Check for "Sleeve Slip": If the entire chuck assembly is rotating independently of the drill spindle, the internal splines are stripped. You will need to replace the chuck assembly. Check if the chuck feels "wobbly" when you shake it; if there is lateral play, the internal bearings have failed.
- Adjust Torque Settings: If the bit is spinning because the drill is "kicking back," rotate the torque adjustment ring (the numbered dial behind the chuck) to a higher setting. If the clutch is set too low, the drill will stop delivering power to the bit, which can feel like the bit is slipping when it's actually the internal clutch engaging.
- Clean with Degreaser: If the bit itself is oily or covered in lubricant, the jaws cannot grip. Wipe the shank of the drill bit with isopropyl alcohol or a degreaser before inserting it into the chuck.

- Avoid Over-Tightening with Tools: Never use pliers to tighten the keyless chuck. This can distort the sleeve and permanently damage the internal threading, making it impossible to remove the bit later.
- Material Matching: When drilling into hardwood or metal, lower the speed setting (using the switch on top of the drill) to avoid overheating the bit, which can cause the metal to expand and lose its grip in the jaws.
- Regular Inspection: Every 10-15 uses, open the chuck fully and inspect the jaws for metal flakes or rounding. If the edges of the jaws look smooth rather than sharp, the chuck is worn out and needs replacement.
