The LED worklight on the DEKOPRO 20V Cordless Drill is wired in parallel with the trigger switch mechanism. When you squeeze the trigger, the circuit closes, sending current to both the motor and the LED diode. If the motor is spinning but the light is dark, you have a localized failure in the LED circuit. If neither the motor nor the light is functioning, the issue is systemic, likely involving the battery contact points or a blown internal fuse. A common cause for this specific failure is "contact bounce" or oxidation on the 20V battery terminals, which prevents the low-voltage LED from receiving a consistent current even if there is enough power to kick the motor into gear. Additionally, because these drills are often used in high-vibration environments, the solder joints connecting the LED to the main PCB (Printed Circuit Board) can crack, creating an open circuit that prevents the light from activating regardless of trigger position.
How to Fix It
To resolve the LED failure, follow these precise steps to isolate the power source and reset the connection:
- Perform a Terminal Clean: Remove the 20V battery pack. Use a cotton swab dipped in 90% isopropyl alcohol to clean the metal contact plates on both the battery and the interior of the drill handle. Look for any black carbon buildup or debris that may be obstructing the flow of electricity.
- Battery Voltage Verification: Place the battery on the charger until the indicator light turns solid green. A "low-voltage" state can sometimes allow the motor to twitch but fail to provide the necessary forward voltage to ignite the LED diode.
- Trigger Cycle Reset: With a fully charged battery installed, rapidly squeeze and release the trigger five times in quick succession. This can sometimes clear a "sticky" contact point within the speed control switch that governs the light's activation.
- Hard Reset: Remove the battery, hold the trigger in the fully depressed position for 15 seconds to drain any residual capacitance from the internal circuitry, then re-insert the battery and test the light again.
If That Didn't Work
If the steps above fail, the issue is likely hardware-based. Try these alternatives:
- Check for Physical Obstructions: Inspect the clear plastic lens over the LED. If the lens is cracked or heavily clouded with sawdust and grime, the light may actually be on, but the luminosity is too low to be visible. Use a microfiber cloth and a drop of glass cleaner to clear the lens.
- Test with an Alternate Battery: If you own a second 20V DEKOPRO battery, swap them. If the light works with the second battery, the original battery has a faulty cell that cannot maintain the specific voltage required for the LED circuit, even if it can still power the motor.
- Internal Wire Inspection: If you are comfortable opening the casing, remove the housing screws and inspect the thin red and black wires leading from the trigger switch to the LED. Look for pinched wires or "cold" solder joints that have detached from the board due to drop-impacts.
- Component Replacement: If the LED diode has burned out (common if the drill was used in extremely high-heat environments), the entire trigger switch assembly may need to be replaced as the LED is often integrated into the switch housing on these 20V models.
