Diagnosis
The rattling on the Inokim Light 2 Super is caused by a combination of mechanical play in the plastic mounting brackets and a lack of vibration dampening between the fender assembly and the front fork. Specifically, the two white nylon mounting clips that secure the fender to the fork legs are prone to "ovaling"—where the bolt hole expands slightly due to the constant vibration of the 10-inch tires over uneven pavement. Once the hole is no longer a perfect circle, the bolt cannot maintain a high-tension clamp, allowing the fender to shift and chatter. Furthermore, the Light 2 Super uses a rigid plastic fender that lacks an integrated rubber gasket. Because there is a direct plastic-on-metal interface at the contact points, every micro-impact from the road is amplified into a high-frequency rattle. You can confirm this by gripping the fender with your hand while jogging the scooter up and down; if you feel a distinct "click" or movement before the fender actually flexes, the mounting hardware has loosened or the brackets have fatigued.
How to Fix It
To eliminate the rattle, you need to create a high-friction seal between the fender and the fork. Follow these steps:
- Flip the scooter upside down or use a kickstand to gain clear access to the front wheel.
- Using a 4mm Allen key, remove the two bolts securing the white plastic brackets to the fork. Be careful not to lose the small washers.
- Inspect the white plastic brackets for hairline fractures. If they are cracked, they must be replaced, but if they are simply loose, proceed to dampening.
- Cut two small squares (approximately 15mm x 15mm) of 2mm thick neoprene rubber or a piece of a discarded bicycle inner tube.
- Place one rubber shim between the fork leg and the white plastic bracket, and another shim between the bracket and the fender body. This creates a "sandwich" that absorbs vibration.
- Re-insert the bolts. Instead of tightening them fully immediately, thread them in until they are finger-tight.
- Align the fender so it is perfectly centered over the tire with a minimum clearance of 10mm to prevent rubbing.
- Tighten the bolts firmly, but do not over-torque them, as the white nylon brackets can strip or snap if forced too hard.
If That Didn't Work
- Replace the Brackets: If the white plastic clips are cracked or the holes are severely ovalized, no amount of shimming will work. Source heavy-duty nylon replacements or 3D-print reinforced PETG brackets to ensure a tighter fit.
- Apply Threadlocker: The vibrations from the Light 2 Super's motor and road surface can back out the fender bolts over time. Apply a small drop of blue Loctite (medium strength) to the threads of the bolts before reinstalling them to ensure they stay clamped.
- Add Foam Tape to the Underside: If the rattle persists, it may be the fender vibrating against the tire during high-speed turns. Apply a strip of adhesive-backed weatherstripping foam to the innermost curve of the fender to dampen the resonance.
- Check the Fork Alignment: Ensure the fork legs are properly seated. If the fork is slightly skewed, it can put asymmetrical pressure on the fender brackets, causing one side to be loose and rattle more than the other.
Heads Up
- Avoid using metal washers against the plastic brackets; the metal will eventually "saw" through the plastic, making the rattle worse. Always use rubber or nylon washers.
- Check the fender bolts every 100 miles. The high-frequency vibration of the 10-inch pneumatic tires is notorious for loosening these specific fasteners.
- When cleaning the scooter, avoid spraying high-pressure water directly into the bracket gaps, as this can push grit into the mounting points and accelerate the wear of the plastic.
- If you install a larger aftermarket tire, you may need to trim the front edge of the fender slightly to prevent it from catching, which would otherwise cause a violent shake at high speeds.
