The Gotrax G4 is rated IPX4, which means it is protected against splashing water from any direction. However, this rating is not a guarantee of waterproofness; it is "splash-resistant." When you ride in the rain, water accumulates in the crevices of the deck, around the LED display housing, and near the charging port. The primary risk is capillary action, where water is drawn into the internal controller and battery compartment through the gaps in the chassis or the charging port seal. If water penetrates the deck, it can cause short circuits on the main PCB (Printed Circuit Board) or lead to corrosion on the battery terminals. You can confirm potential water ingress if you notice the display flickering, the motor stuttering, or if the scooter refuses to power on after a wet ride. Even if it works now, trapped moisture can lead to "creeping corrosion," where the electronics fail weeks after the actual rain event.
How to Fix It
To properly clean and dry your Gotrax G4 after rain exposure, follow these precise steps to prevent long-term hardware failure:
- Immediately power off the scooter and do not plug it into the charger. Charging a damp battery or controller can cause a catastrophic short.
- Use a microfiber cloth dampened with warm water and a drop of mild dish soap to wipe down the stem, the handlebars, and the outer perimeter of the deck. Do not use chemical degreasers or pressurized hoses.
- Carefully dry the LED display area using a dry, lint-free cloth. Use a cotton swab (Q-tip) to gently remove water trapped in the seams around the display buttons and the power switch.
- Pay special attention to the charging port. Use a dry cloth to wipe the exterior, then use a can of compressed air to blow out any moisture trapped inside the port cavity.
- Wipe the folding mechanism hinge and the brake lever pivot points. These are high-friction areas where water can cause premature rust.
- Position the scooter upright in a dry, indoor area with a fan blowing toward the deck and charging port for 2-4 hours. This ensures any trapped humidity evaporates before you attempt to charge the unit.
If That Didn't Work
If the scooter is behaving erratically or won't power on after a heavy rain, try these advanced recovery methods:
- Manual Deck Drainage: If you suspect water has entered the battery compartment, use a set of Hex/Allen keys to remove the bottom deck plate. Gently tilt the scooter to allow any pooled water to drain out. Do not shake the scooter violently; instead, use a vacuum cleaner with a hose attachment to suck out moisture from the edges of the battery casing.
- Isopropyl Alcohol Cleaning: If you see white or green crusty residue (corrosion) on the circuit board, use 91% or 99% Isopropyl Alcohol and a soft toothbrush to gently scrub the affected areas. This removes the corrosion without leaving conductive residue.
- Dehumidification Chamber: Place the scooter (if portable) in a small room with a high-capacity dehumidifier running on the "Max" setting for 24 hours. This pulls moisture out of the internal components that a fan cannot reach.
- Contact Cleaning: If the throttle or brake is unresponsive, apply a small amount of electronic contact cleaner (like WD-40 Specialist Contact Cleaner, NOT standard WD-40) into the switch housings to displace moisture and restore connectivity.

- Never use a pressure washer or a garden hose on the G4; the high pressure will force water past the IPX4 seals and directly into the battery.
- Avoid charging the scooter immediately after a rain ride. Wait at least 4 hours to ensure the charging port is bone-dry to avoid sparking.
- Periodically apply a silicone-based lubricant to the folding hinge and the brake cable entry points to repel water and prevent rust.
- If you frequently ride in wet conditions, consider applying a thin layer of clear dielectric grease around the exterior of the charging port rim to create an extra water barrier.
