Diagnosis
The stiffness in your Gotrax G4's folding mechanism is almost certainly caused by a lack of lubrication. The primary hinge pin and the sliding latch pin operate under high pressure; without proper grease, metal-on-metal friction increases dramatically. Over time, dust and grit can embed into the dry joints, acting like abrasive paste that accelerates wear and makes the action feel gritty and dangerously stiff.
How to Fix It
First, clean the hinge area with a dry brush or cloth to remove loose debris. For the fix, you'll need a specific lubricant: a spray or tube of white lithium grease is ideal for this high-load application. Do not use WD-40, which is a cleaner/penetrant, not a lasting lubricant.
- Carefully apply a small amount of grease directly to the main hinge pin where the stem meets the deck.
- Apply grease to the sliding metal pin inside the locking latch assembly.
- Manually work the latch open and closed, and fold/unfold the stem several times to fully work the lubricant into all contact points.
- Wipe away any excess grease to prevent attracting more dirt.
If That Didn't Work
If lubrication doesn't resolve the issue, internal component failure is likely. The coil spring inside the latch can lose tension or become misaligned, failing to push the locking pin into place with enough force. In other cases, the pin itself or its housing can become bent from previous forced attempts.
