Diagnosis
Error code E-03 on your Gotrax G4 specifically signifies a communication failure between the thumb throttle (the part you press to accelerate) and the scooter's main controller board. The controller is not receiving a proper signal from the throttle, so it halts operation and displays this error for safety.
How to Fix It
- Turn the scooter completely off.
- Remove the four screws from the deck cover near the base of the handlebars to access the internal wiring compartment.
- Locate the throttle connector. It is typically a small, white plastic plug with 3-5 wires leading to it.
- Carefully unplug this connector. Inspect both the male and female ends for any bent, corroded, or pushed-in pins. Look for signs of moisture or dirt.
- Firmly reconnect the plug, ensuring it clicks into place. Also, check the wiring along the stem for any pinches or damage and secure any loose cables with zip ties.
- Replace the deck cover, power the scooter on, and test.
If That Didn't Work
If the connection is clean and secure but E-03 persists, the throttle unit itself has likely failed internally. You will need to replace the thumb throttle assembly. For the G4, this typically requires cutting the old wires and connecting the new throttle using solder and heat-shrink tubing or high-quality waterproof butt connectors. Ensure you match the wire colors correctly. As a last diagnostic step, if you have a multimeter, you can check for a changing voltage signal from the throttle's signal wire (often yellow or green) when pressed, but component replacement is the usual solution.

Never attempt to bypass or "jump" the throttle wires to make the scooter run. A malfunctioning throttle can cause a dangerous, uncontrollable acceleration (known as a "runaway" or "ghost acceleration") if it sends an erroneous full-power signal.
